Thread: Anyone know company that can extend reamer length?

Hi all,

I have 2 machine reamers, 23/64" and 27/64" respectively. Both are 7" overall in length.

I need a piece of round bar brazed on to extend out to 12".

Any ideas who or where I can have this done?

Victoria preferably but I can send country wide.

Does the reamer when finished need to pass through a hole 12" long at the Diameter stated.

it needs to pass through a 11 5/8" length.

How about a 3/8 drive socket on the square and go from there....

I have put sockets on taps to extend their length...

The length of the piece is 11 5/8" long. The bore throughout is 23/64. This is a chucking reamer, not a hand reamer so there is no square. I've had them extended before in whilst I lived in the UK by brazing a piece of round bar to the reamer.

Have you got facilities to finish machine the reamer after it is extended.

Unfortunately not. Wood lathe only. I'm thinking probably the most accurate way to do it would be to utilise the small bore in the end of the reamer and turn a male end on sone round bar then braze together. Anyone out there have this capabilty who is willing to take on this small project for a fee?

any smaller type machine shop should be able to do it

the larger ones can also do it , but would they as it may be too fiddley for them.

Depending on the diamater of the shank and wheather it is hardened or not your best bet would be to reduce the diamater of the last 25mm of shank to say 6mm (7/32") then bore a press fit size hole into some appropriate size stock, inset the reamer then braize to secure.
This is probably suitable if you plan to use the reamer for a few one off type jobs but if you plan to use it for production runs you might need to source custom made reamers.
If you decide to have a go at extending them, PM me and I can probably have a crack at it for you.

This would be the best option in my opinion..
I would take Greg up on the offer. Also if you are lucky Greg will have a tool post grinder and be able to finnish the extention back to a near factory finnish..
