Hi Garry, A mate and I both have these beaut little lathes. We have accumulated bits of info as both machines are missing stuff. This includes some sketchy history of Brackenbury & Austin, a couple of promotional flyers and adverts. We would greatly appreciate reproducable photos of change gear chart on the outside of the end cover and details of change gears that you have. I had contacted the ever resourceful pipeclay about completing my change gear set, but need to confirm thickness and keyway size. Regards, AndrewOC.

Premo Lathe
Gavin and Andrew many thanks for your replies. The change plate on the outside of the cover is an engraved piece of sky blue traffolyte with white underneath, coming through as a blue and white engraving. Appears as though this was done by someone other that the manufacturer. I am about to do a CAD dwg of this and get the engraving redone on a piece of black anodised aluminium, should stand out OK. The change gears are 1/2" thick with a 1/8" keyway and marked on the casting is the number of teeth and 16DP ( I do not know what pressure angle they are either 141/2 or 20 deg?). I am going to get pipeclay to repair or replace a couple that are missing teeth. The 80/63 idler gear combination are scotch keyed together. I have ordered a manual that Tony Griffiths (from lathes uk.com) has which may have a bit of info. I am missing the screw threading cutting dial and need to replace the drive belt and finish repairs to apron and gearbox. They are a very solid lathe with a massive tailstock. I will take some photos of the change chear charts outside and inside the cover and attempt to post them if not I will send them to your home address.
Many thanks
Garry

Premo Lathe Photos
Having trouble with digital camera at the moment, should be fixed Wednesday????
Could you pls let me now what is on the speed range plate which is on top of the back gear cover. I am missing that plate and also what size is the dual pulley from the motor that drives the speed chane pulley arrangement , I think that I might have a homemade pulley set up?
Thanks Garry

Hi Garry,
spindle speed plate is missing on mine as well and my mates one is buried somewhere in his full garage! So that is 'subject to further investigation'...
The pulley on the motor is 3.5" and 7" diameters.
hope that helps,
Andrew.

Premo Lathe
Andrew,
Many thanks for the info, I will sent you the details of the gear change plates as a excel spread sheet so as you know what gears you are missing. Once I do the cad dwg I will be able to get a few engraved..

I own a Premo Mark III built by Tulloch Ltd. I have attached a photo (hopefully) of of the plate showing threads.
I have also attached a photo of the "selector fork" showing where a previous operator (high school kid) broke a piece off. Maybe someone has one of those in their scrap box.

Thanks for the pics Makita. The 1950's Premos have a similar chart inside the change gears cover- i'll compare mine when i get home.
The quick change selector is a bit sad! I'm sure if you can patch it up it would be ok- mine has a lot of slop and has to be goaded into postition anyway.
Have you looked at the link (posted above) to Tony Griffiths excellent 'lathes.co.uk' website? Is your lathe the Premo model pictured or like the Veem? Any clues to where the Tulloch that made your lathe was located?
Here is my Premo, usual story- bought cheap, requires work!;
Regards AndrewOC.

Premo Lathe
Makita,
Do you have any photos of the change gear arrangement that is on a plate on the outside of the cover, the one that I have I think that someone has had engraved. the original should have been photo etched? like the other plates.Tullock were at Rhodes and used to do a lot of work for the railways, long time ago.
Regards
Garry

Andrew
I have attached a picture of my Premo, hard to get to in the corner of the shed. The quick change selector is my biggest problem. Once I figure out how to fix/replace it I will just need to find some gears and the lathe will be as good as new again.

Mine only has the change gear arrangement on the inside of the cover. I have posted a pic of the lathe and was wondering whether it is covered in the manual you ordered from the UK?
