Oil for Lathe Gearbox/Apron
Hi all,
I want to replace the oil in the gearbox and apron of my AL960B clone. I bought my lathe second hand, so I have no manual. What oils do you recommend to use? I ass-u-me you can use the same oil in both? Anybody know a good source for these oils in WA? Apart from H&F/Fiora of course.
Look forward to your responses.

The AL960B manual says to use Tellus 27 in the gearbox and Tonna 27 in the saddle. I've never seen either oil and can't find them on the net.
I was told by General Tools (the H&F agent in SA) to use 32 weight hydraulic oil in both.

I found that Blackwoods carry Tellus Oils as an agent for them but reckon you'd have difficulty getting Tellus 27 which I too was after............settled on Tellus 32 as they stocked that - Blackwoods aren't cheap so would recommend you shop around as they only sell it in 20 litre tins and that didn't have the spout attachment on it so you'd need to decant into another tin......makes it awkward..............Lee

Not sure why they would recommend a slideway oil for the apron, as I cannot imagine that model lathe has an oil pump in the apron for automatic slideway lubrication.... It is probably recommended as that is what you put in lathes with auto-lube like nearly all industrial machines and they probably have not remembered that the smaller lathes do not auto-lube.
I would put Tellus 27 or Mobil DTE Medium (ISO46) or Heavy Medium (ISO68) in both..

I was confused about the Tonna oil recommendation as well. The saddle doesn't have a pump the oil just lubes the gears in the saddle. The manual doesn't look like it came from H&F, it looks like it comes from the manufacturer though.

The manual for my AL1000C says to use Tonna in the apron as well.... I just use ISO68 hydraulic oil... There is nothing special int he apron to warrant anything else, and unless you want to buy 20 litres of oil you don't have much of a choice....

I have an AL340A from Hare & Forbes. I was told to use Tellus 32 in the gearboxes & carriage and Tonna 68 as a slideway's oil. Some time ago another member suggested Tonna 32 in cold climates and 46 in warm ones. Just found it: last post by Retromilling at http://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/wh...achines-50137/

Thanks to everyone for their help/input. I am going to try some ISO46 hydraulic oil - we buy it by the 200L drum to use in our tractors. I didnt even think that I might have some suitable oil around the place. Thanks again for your help. More questions will follow!

For an apron I reckon you could successfully use an automotive gear oil as well, even tranny fluid. It wouldn't see anywhere near the temprature and loading that it would get in an auto application.

Our local Supercheap had Tellus46 @ $100 for 20L, which I thought was reasonable... and handy when chasing things on the weekend.
I don't even consider Blackwoods these days. Their buying power should allow them to have far more competitive prices than the smaller industrial retailers, but experience has shown they're just too damn greedy :/

Thanks for that.
If you dont live close to Hare and forbes you have to pay $75.90 plus postage, which I think would bring it over the super cheap price.
