    Default Dangers of Acetylene

Some of you have probably already seen this, but for those who haven't, a graphic reminder of how dangerous acetylene can be.

So now he has an 'open top tourer' instead of a van, plus an aluminium ladder that will be very useful for climbing around corners....

Remind me not to live next door to a plumber.

Well there you go. I missed it the other week, didn't have time to do a search this arvo.
Still, a good reminder as to the dangers of acetylene. I think we all get a bit complacent with it after a while.

The explosive range of acetylene is very wide,Can't remember the original figures but in the order of
97% acetylene /3% air to 90% Air to 10% acetylene.

I got this at a presentation from an in plant firechief.
cig used to have a samples of stuff that had been in fires and the like.
I have had a very healthy respect for the stuff ever since.

This is why they give it a pungent garlic like odour. The plumber may have missed the odour but I don't think he had long,as the light triggred the blast when he opened the door on the van.

I think its actually closer to an explosive range from 3% to 97% in air - it's got the widest explosive range of any gas.

Not to mention that it forms copper acetylide (a heat and shock sensitive high explosive) when in contact with copper (I think you'd find a fair bit of copper in a plumber's van!).

Sorry mate, my remark about wood working was never intended to taken as having a go at you. which is why I put the smiley thingo on the end. If you took it that way I do apologise. I have total respect for people who make things from wood, as, apart from basic stuff like wall framing, anything else is a bit of a black art to me. As far as making allowances as you are a woodworker, I actually meant that, but not from a nasty point of view. If I said to you or another woodworker that I didn't know much about wood working but I was trying to learn and that I wanted to buy a wood working tool I would expect the woodworker to make allowances for me. Simple as that.
