I’m getting them now. And yeah, they are annoying. Not a deal breaker, but annoying. The thing is, I just minimise them without even looking at them. It’s just automatic. I can’t imagine anyone looks at them.
Admins- are you going to do us the courtesy of telling us why we are getting these, or are we plebs just expected to suck it up?Chris

I have always had these and have no problem with them: they are relevant to the forum, and don't obscure anything. Also, on this computer (Win 7 & Chrome) the bottom of page ads are relevant to the forum, and don't obscure any information.
The ads on the other computer ( Ubuntu & Win 10, with either Chrome or Firefox) are general merchandising ads, mostly not relevant to the forum, and frequently cover information on posts. If you close the ad, you get a query from Google "why this ad?" None of the tick boxes with the query covers obscuring information in posts or general irritation at extra scrolling etc caused by the ad!

I find the above statement really offensive to those who put a lot of unpaid hours into this forum to support it.
I am really upset. I have read and re-read this post and had breakfast and then a bit of time in the garden to cool down and now I am back.
This particular admin can't tell you the cause related to getting ads at the bottom of your screen. It seems some members are getting these ads and others are not. No it is not special treatment that some receive ads and others not.
At any given time I expect that the resident technical guru is up to his arrrse in alligators and he is dealing with them just to keep the forum online. Thanks to those amongus who report posts, sometimes I forget to thank you.
As a part this group your computer type PC or Apple and the operating systems for such different computer types are varied. There is so much variation in individual applications I daresay its difficult for even the pros to sort out.
Just to remind some folks, this forum started as a small sub forum of the woodwork forum about twenty years back. In 2015 it split off from the Woodwork side and became a stand alone forum in it own right. It has become very big and has international members. Check the stats! With growth comes an increase in operation cost. Think servers and other hardware.
My thoughts are, those ads are part of the very small price paid for the other wise FREE membership of this forum.
Google and its cluster of like companies are fixed on tailoring those ads to a certain demographic- us.
There are costs with operating forums and wouldn't you think this could possibly be a way of defraying them?
Alternately how much in membership fees would you be prepared to pay yearly for the use of the forums?
You pay for your mob phone service. Where are the complaints about receiving ads on a service you pay for?

Nature Abhors A Vacuum
Calm down Grahame. If it hadn't taken someone from the Admin team 12 DAYS to even acknowlewdge there's an issue, this thread might have taken a different turn.
Let me offer another view- The regular posters on this forum are the main "content providers" for the fourm. They provide this "content" free of charge. Without them the forum is nothing. Ignoring them doesn't seem like a smart move. Perhaps, in future, if they are having an issue with the forum, the Admin team might offer some timely input? Twelve days is too long. Even a simple "we are working on it" is a heck of a lot better than ignoring it.
To be clear, my beef isn't so much with the ads. It was the lack of any feedback to compaints from a number of members.Chris

My system is ad free..
I run windows 10 and Chrome.
So there must be something going on in the background of some operating systems...

I could be wrong but I suspect the forum admins are not the people that would have control of the anchor ad configuration.
Setting for these are done at a site level, the forum admins probably do not have rights to change the settings on the web host. Happy to be corrected or confirmed if this is the case.
For those of you on the Woodwork forums will note that the same ads are appearing over there.
There are a number of articles up on the web with people having issues with ads appearing or not when they should be, very browser and configuration specific.
Could very well be specific Microsoft patch, browser, version or other add ins that effect weather they appear for particular users.

I don't think so - it is a free site therefore you are the product, you get adverts.
I normally use W10/W11 and Chrome - I have no adverts (ad blocker installed)
I ran Edge instead and got lots of adverts. Logged into the (this) site and the adverts remained.
I installed the ad blocker I use on Chrome - adverts disappeared.
My conclusion, use an ad blocker. While you're at it, install a popup blocker.
I respect those of you who do not load an ad blocker on principal but let's face it - you shouldn't have to lock your house or your car when you leave it, you shouldn't have to be cautious walking down a dark alley at night - but you do.

Yes it is directed at the user, the admins of the web site host configure where they are targeted irrespective of browser or OS so it is their choice, it is also about their revenue from hosting the site.
My comment was directed at people making the statement that it works for them on Windows 8 or Windows 10, Chrome or Firefox, there are many more factors than the OS or browser flavour.

Understood but the OS and the browser are not factors unless they include ad blockers.
The factors that affect the appearance of ads are related to revenue. There are some sites that display ads and and block access to users with ad blockers unless the ad blocker is disabled for their site. I simply go elsewhere and apparently many others choose the same path as many sites will now let you in with an ad blocker after a whinge.
Anyway, enough from me.

14th May 2022, 05:43 PM #43Surely the admins read the forum?! This thread has been up for 9 days.
I don't often get on to Metalwork Forums unless I'm notified of a problem that needs to be sorted out. Unfortunately I only just got notification of this at 11:12am this morning (Sat 14th May) had someone let me know earlier it would have been fixed immediately as it now has.
Must say that I'm more than a little gobsmacked at some responses although I haven't bothered to read them all as yet.

I'm sorry for the angst and gnashing of teeth over a single ad at the bottom of all pages on a free site that costs you nothing and askes for nothing in return other than a bit of civility.
Strewth!!!
We have had ads on these forums since they first went live.
Those ads are only for non members and I make no apologies for them.
However I do apologise for the ad at the bottom of the page. That was me I was checking the ads for non members and archives after a problem, and inadvertently enabled the bottom of page ad.
A quick message via Contact Us at the bottom of the page where that shocking ad was, would have had it sorted out within a couple of hours.
For those who think (shock 'n' horror) that someone might have been making money off you, on this site that you don't pay for. Here's the total amount contributed to the coffers of U-Beaut your benefactor 3 cents for 12 days.
I think I'll retire with my ill gotten gains... now how do I pay tax on 3 cents.
Lighten up people. The world may be coming to an end everywhere else but it's not on here.

14th May 2022, 06:31 PM #44THIS IS YOUR FORUM PEOPLE
- If you see a problem with a post or thread report it and admin will fix it or get someone to fix it for them. If you see a problem you can't report such as an ad at the bottom of all pages use the Contact Us form at the bottom of all pages.
- It only takes a minute or so out of your life and yes I know that's a lost minute that you will never get back, but at least it may stop you from having a nervous breakdown, stress or heart attack.
- If all else fails contact me ubeaut via PM and if it's fixable it will be done in short time or at worst within a day or so depending on there the GURU is.
- Things like the Ad problem can't be fixed by Grahame Collins or BobL Only by me and I don't get in here very often. That's why I need to be contacted directly.
Help yourself by helping us not by treating the forums as though it was Twitter.
Cheers - Neil
PS For what it's worth: I inadvertently Added the Ad to the bottom of the page. What I didn't add was an add.Are you a registered member? Why not? CLICK HERE TO REGISTER. It's free and takes less than a minute!
