Thread: An idea for a co-operative project

I was looking at an iPhone application called I.D. Wood which lets you use your iPhone to see pictures of cut and finished wood of various species and gives you some basic information on the wood, its uses and qualities. Very useful but, not worth buying...

Why? Because,of course it is a US-biased thing. It has one entry for Eucalypt....which really tells you very little.

I wondered whether we should have a project of putting together the data for the species listed in Bootle with the required pictures. It could be kept in the WIKI section of the Forum and after a while Neil could offer the data to the developers of the ID Wood application on the basis that WWF members can buy the iPhone version for a discounted price.

Some of our members already have their own very comprehensive info banks on wood (eg TITT), so I hope this wouldn't take very long to get us to the point where we have a really useful library of wood pictures and information available free to members online and also available for a cheap price in a mobile form.

Any thoughts?

Yes something like that, but maybe with a bit more advice on uses and handling tips (eg what glues and finishes, is it for furniture or turning or boats or whatever). And then to have it in a concise version so you can carry it around on your iPhone. Since we mainly use Australian timber we need to do our own work (and overseas sites and apps are unlikely to be helpful unless we supply the data for them).
