    Default An interesting development

Came across this interesting development with 3D printing.

Thanks for that link which I found very interesting.

Being able to print without support will save printing time and plastic but i'm also interested in in the potential strength gains.

It's taken me some time to discover that a range of printing with support options are available that can also save a lot of time. For instance printing density of supports can be scaled right down compared to the actual printed part density and there are a variety of support patterns available that use a lot less plastic and take far less time than conventional full support.

An example of this is the hollow black body of this hand sander object which would ordinarily consume considerable time and plastic.
Reducing the print support from 20% density (which is what the object itself is printed at) to 10%, and using a "tree structure" as opposed to normal support saves just over 20% in time and plastic.

These also makes removal of the support structures from the print much easier and for delicate structures, less likely to damage to print.

All that aside hopefully by the time I look at buying my next printer I can afford a rotating head
