Do a search for your lathe on google, something should come up about Macon/Demco, it will bring up a spec sheet with 48 tpi threads listed, your lathe should have 8 vertical columns and 6 horizontal columns for the thread pitches.
Start at the lowest tpi, write 8 down, first horizontal column, continue for the next 40 pitches you will end up with 6 horizontal lines and 8 vertical.

I tried that but when I cut a thread to test it was the incorrect pitch, it was about 12TPI when this method and an image of a chart I found for a LeBlond regal (the lathe that this is supposedly a copy of ) said the the thread should be 18TPI.

It is possible that the metric/imperial gear is flipped over? (127/120)

Your thread pitches should start from right to left, coarse to fine.
Check for the cub or cadet, I would think it should be the same for the defiance.
