It would be much easier and cheaper to leave the original motor, pulley and belt in place and just fit a VFD.

Yes, but it would be pretty gutless as the original motor is only a 3.2 amp unit.

The new one is 12.7 - so I’ll be able to lean on it pretty well.

Current is directly related to Voltage, you can't compare a single phase 240 volt motor, to a 3 phase 400 volt motor, purely on the amperage draw on the nameplate..

agree. comparing watts/kw will give you a closer picture, however you also have to consider a 3 phase motor has heaps more starting torque. single phase induction motors have a very poor starting winding. they are easy to stall can oscillate at startup under load, on rare occasions, and thats before we even get into trying to reverse it which is trivial on a 3 phase motor. and with a VSD you dont even have to buy a contactor set/thermal overload.

i really shouldn't be saying this however because i live just down the road from the op and would love that little 3 phase motor ;-)

I’ve countered with “Thanks, they look great - I had left a message as locating the accessories accompanying the lathe and they are obviously them - I don’t think that it is fair to ask me for more money as they are part of the lathe itself as face plate, 2nd chuck, steady etc - are all part and parcel of the lathe itself - hopefully chuck keys can be located as well? “
I'd just read all the postings, and didn't see a comment about the extra bits. How did you get on with the auction place, did you get them, and how much extra did they want, or did they go in the scrap?

    Hi Kryn,

Yes thanks, I did manage to rescue the extra bits without too much trouble!

I’m now hatching a plan on how to recondition the worn out thread in the cross feed nut!

I don’t suppose there are any 5/8 x 10 LH Square Thread taps out there?

    Is it definitely square?
There’s a trapezoid one on eBay

It is a very common problem. The LH Acme thread cross feed screw will be worn as well as the nut. So you need to find a length of the correct size LH ACME thread and machine down one end to a short stub and you then cut of the old worn ACME thread and drill/bore out the original end part that has the handle on it and mate the two together.

You can buy lengths of ACME LH screw in various sizes. I have repaired a few cross feeds , sometimes you have to machine up a new length of LH ACME screw thread if the right size isn't available.

This write up describes the repair, the measurements are different for different brands of lathe

I would put very, very, very low odds on it being a square thread. I have pulled apart at least 20 lathes and I have never seen a square thread anywhere on any of them.
