Regardless, if they accept to include it with the lathe then great, else try hard to negotiate a deal because later you will be paying more than you have right now for the lathe to buy them.

    Default Tafe

I am surprised that Bairnsdale TAFE would have a lathe that size, it could have been used in the Automotive department maybe. The main training facility for Fitters & Turners in Eastern Victoria was at Yallourn TAFE where they had a large building with many lathes and milling machines and other machining equipment, a heat treating oven , cylindrical grinder and much more.

I reckon it is a bad deal myself, normally the accessories come with a machine like that. I would be speaking in person to somebody at the TAFE and explain to them that the lathe is next to useless without the accessories. Tell them it is like buying a car , then paying an extra fee for the jack and spare wheel. The office people just need a gentle explanation on how a lathe is set up, you should get a 4 jaw chuck with it at least.

Default GMF CAPTAIN Mark 2 - three phase motor

I’m loving the little Cadet, despite still being unable to spin anything up on it!

Our resident sparky tells me that this motor is a dedicated three phase motor and will not take well to bring re-wired to 240 Volts.

Does anyone have a lead on locating either a 240 v motor or a three phase/high amperage motor with 8” by 6.5” baseplate that also has a 1” diameter shaft?

    cheers

You are better off running it off a VFD or a phase converter.

A 220v motor in the 2hp range rarely comes up on sale in the used market. Or consider buying new.

Just buy one of the 220-380v step up VFDs off AliExpress - usually Ecogoo or Nflixin brand.
Leave the motor as is, hook up the VFD and configure half a dozen settings and you’re good to go!

    Default SAE 30 Headstock Oil

Should I be using a BP Autran TO-430 as a dedicated transmission oil for the headstock? Manual & machine says use SAE 30 oil everywhere

    Hi Sj,

SAE 20-40 is a common engine oil ! Straight SAE 30 seems to be in short supply here.

    Thanks BJ

I can get Castrol (Bp by another name) Transmax Off-road 30 locally from the local Trucking Joint. I’ll check with the boss at work before I order it in (and maybe the Castrol tech line) - but I think it might be just the ticket as I suspect it doesn’t contain friction modifiers or extreme pressure additives that could damage brass bushings.

    Cheers

Usually you use a non-detergent oil in headstocks because it allows any metal particles to gravitate down to the floor and stay there.

4 stroke small engine oil is usually straight SAE30.
Readily available from the likes of the big green shed.

    Hi Steve, Guys,

The local "Motor Save" place does the Two stroke oil in four pint containers at £32 each. At £8 a pint its four times dearer than a pint of beer !!! and it doesn't tell you anywhere I could see what grade it is.
    Best Regards:

    Default New motor mount

Thanks for all the oil tips folks!

I’ve progressed the new motor mount packing on the mounting table tonight.
Still got a bit to do while I’m waiting for a new serpentine belt and will have to see if the boss will let me bore out the old pulley at work on the weekend ( am definitely adhering to the “no foreigners during the week” rule!)
