Default Sheraton Defiance cross slide removal

Having just recently acquired a Sheraton Defiance lathe, I'm trying to figure out how I can remove the cross slide so I can give it a good clean and service. I've removed the screw that secures the nut but the nut seems to have a spigot on it and it would only come free if the cross slide was raised about 5mm. Surely you don't have to remove the gib strip in order to remove the cross slide? Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi Straydog01,

On my Myford, you just wind the handle until it slides off. The nut on mine is also the gear for the power cross feed. The gibs are also captive, you have to remove the four securing screws to remove the gibs.
    Best Regards:
    Baron J.

    Hi BaronJ
Definitely cant just wind it off. It comes up against a stop in both directions. It looks like the gib needs to be removed but that then means its more time consuming to get it set up again. I was hoping it was simpler than that.
I would really like to find a manual for this lathe but so far no luck.

    Hey mate

I have a sheraton Cadet, i believe the setup is probably similar. You cannot just wind the cross slide off the dovetails.
The cross slide lead screw needs to be wound out of the nut, being removed toward the operator. To accomplish that the lead screw/handle retainer needs to be unscrewed from the apron. So using a pair of multigrips and a rag unwind the retainer from the apron first, and then supporting the retainer in one hand use the handle to unwind the lead screw from the cross slide nut. Now the whole assembly will come out toward operator. Now the screw that retains the cross slide nut can be undone, and the nut gently tapped downward with a pin punch through the screw hole to dislodge it from its recess in the underside of the cross slide.

Try that, it worked well for me tonight when i disassembled mine.

    Cheers, Rowdy

    Thanks Rowdy
I'll give that a try. I don't suppose you know if an operator manual ever existed for these machines?

No worries. These are a loose copy of the leblond regal. manuals for these are freely available, called 'running a regal'. they are not exactly the same, at least in my experience, but very similar. they changed a bit over the years but if you have a look you can find the manual for the models that are most like the sheratons. I have not seen a sheraton specific manual.

Mine is pretty banged up and worn. I got it at auction from the ford factory in Geelong. The bed is badly worn from utter mongs never cleaning or lubricating the slideways and the cross slide handle where the retainer screws into the apron was broken off. hopeless.

It did have about 5 coats of paint on it though...
