Default SHERATON CADET Lathe headed to Morwell

I've just bitten the bullet and bought this Sheraton Cadet lathe sight unseen and will be going to Bairnsdale to pick it up next week.

It looks to be in fairly good nick by the looks of the slightly grainy photos.

I'm look forward to getting it home and setting it up!

I’ve looked at the pick up address and realised that it’s at the BAIRNSDALE TAFE Trade School.

When picking up the lathe make sure you look around or ask about the accessories if any as they cost a fair bit. Faceplate, fixed and traveling steady, drill chuck, collet chuck etc?

    Default pick up

Nice score . Make sure the transport guy (looks like it is you) doesn't lift it with a sling around the chuck !! Some people tend to do that to lathes

I think some of these Sheraton models had a less common type of spindle nose ?

Hopefully, there are some good accessories in the centre drawer. I have left a message request on the sale property manager’s voicemail!

I think I’ve identified those round cross holes as likely to accept 1” round bar to sling it with!

I’m in the dark as to the spindle nose. I’m also hoping the spindle will accept 50 mm shafts?

I do not know what's the maximum diameter the spindle shaft will accept but why exactly are you asking? Do you plan on using a solid bar through the spindle as a lifting point?

These are d14 spindle mount I think so no way they will take 50mm bar, I think 34 or 32mm will be the max it will pass.

No, not at all - I have prepped 2 lengths of 24 mil round bar to sling it via the lifting holes.

I am hoping the spindle inside diameter will accept 2” bar stock, because I have a long standing repeat job that utilises 48/50 mm &/or 2” diameter stock !

I just had that thought as I have seen various people run a bar through the spindle bore to lift a lathe.

Here are a couple of shots of another Cadet - spindle looks promising- but if it’s early to mid 30’s then se-lä-vē!!! (I’m just an apprentice with a bad haircut and a dream!!)

Looks like a copy of the manual is available:

I think you might be mistaking the slide-out swarf tray for a storage drawer? It appears to be full of swarf. As above, I'd be scouring the site for any change gears, chucks, faceplate etc.

As luck would have it, this lot has turned up with a note

    ”James

We have located various items shown above which we understand are compatible with the Sheraton Lathe you are collecting tomorrow morning

    If of interest to you
they can be bought for cash (receipt issued) “

    I’ve countered with

“Thanks, they look great - I had left a message as locating the accessories accompanying the lathe and they are obviously them - I don’t think that it is fair to ask me for more money as they are part of the lathe itself as face plate, 2nd chuck, steady etc - are all part and parcel of the lathe itself - hopefully chuck keys can be located as well? “

    Does your foot hurt?

You bought the lathe as photographed - you didn't buy the accessories. Unfortunately, that's how auctions work. In fact, you're very lucky the accessories weren't sold in bit and pieces across 4 other mixed lots.

Your reply reads like you believe you're entitled to just have them, and then you go on to ask for them to look for MORE stuff for you, having already spent the time to locate, photograph and send to you the other stuff.

Keep in mind these are not metal working enthusiasts, they're people working in an office in a TAFE. And as such, I think you'll be very lucky after responding in that fashion if they don't just throw the lot to the scrappy.

Hopefully, for your sake, they have more tolerance than I would in their shoes...
