Hercus ATM 260 Back Gear Question
HI firstly I am a newbie here so hi to fellow metal enthusiasts! I am just getting into this hobby lathe and I decided to buy an older Hercus 260 ATM, firstly because I believe it was made to be relatively reliable and that you can get parts for it. I have a question about the back gears. I notice that when I put the back gear into the drive train, all gears lock? I notice that there are (2) hex screws through the bull gear (I think that is the term??) and screwed into the side of the pulley spindle. I not sure if this is correct! The guy I bought it from said it was bought at an auction from a trade school. Anyway, I have a video of what I am talking about (link here or copy and paste below to my google drive) because a picture tell a thousand words. Any assistance from the knowladgable crew to get me back on track would really appreciated

The Bull gear should only have one hole in it to allow for a pin to be pulled out around 1/4" to allow the Bull gear to turn freely.
It should not have two cap screws in it.
There are two holes 180 degrees apart in the cone pully, these holes accommodate the single pin that should be in the Bull gear.
The pin in the Bull gear is retained by a spring type clip.
The pin has two recesses cut into it around its Od to locate and hold the pin when it is inserted into the cone pully ( fast speed ) and removed or clear of the cone pully so as to allow the use of the back gear ( slow speed ).
Are the cap screws screw in to the cone pully?
Are you able to remove the cap screws?

Chris, welcome to the forum.
This sort of shows the pin that Pipeclay is talking about (on an older Hercus):

and here is the pin for $12.50:

which I think includes the spring/clip

Thanks
Thanks Pipeclay, this now makes a hole lot of sense! I don't know why it has been secured by the cap screws? I appreciate you taking the time to sort me out

Thanks Nigelpearson
Thanks for the item and website info NigelPearson, I went and bought one of each . Judging by the size of the cap screws inserted, I might have to dis-assembly the spindle anyway I hope there is no damage such as a compromised pin housing!

If you are very lucky you may have no issues.
Someone has gone to the trouble of pulling the spindle to drill the second hole in the Bull gear, if the Bull gear is damaged where the spring clip locates or the Bull gear is drilled oversize for a thread it would probably be easier to just replace the Bull gear.

Hopefully luck will be on my side! Luckily these parts are still available and I won't have to make one or get someone to make one!

Hello and welcome. I live 20 minutes from you. I also have a 260ATM. I'm happy to give you a rundown of the machine if you want to come over to my place. Or I'm happy to come to you and have a look over your machone. PM me if you want to meet up.
