    Hi Jim,
    There is a cheaper alternative.
Remember the old thongs. No not the undies, i am speaking of the the thongs you wear on your feet.

They were many colours on the sole but always has a black strap that pushed through the sole. The black rubberish strap alway broke long before the thongs wore out. We found the thongs way back when we had a 4" linisher back at TAFE to prepare weld samples for testing.

The sole does the same work as the block, except it does not turn in to a jam after a few months in our Mackay atmosphere. The commercial ones are quite dear for what they are. It is a similar decompostion found on the slip on rubberish tool handles and tool covers.

I noticed the rubber armor on a Bushnell spotting scope went the same way but not in the same time frame.

The thong sole works as well but lasts longer both wear wise and resistance to break down.

These blocks maybe alright in your neck of the woods but don't last more than a few months up here.

    I hope this helps someone.

    Grahame

That's a good tip Grahame thanks. Some else mentioned to me that the rubber will also clean files up nicely.

That one that I have been using is pretty old, they last and last. What I really like about this stuff is even when you sand dried varnish or paint off wood using your belt sander, do you know how that gums up the grit and it gets that glazed gummed up deposit? The rubber will even strip that glazed stuff straight off.

Good tip as you said I thought every one new about them, I have been using them at least since the seventies, one I have at the moment would be 10 years plus, twice as long as the one you show can't remember the brand

Thanks, they work so well even to get that glazed paint and varnish off the grit that gets there if you sand wood that has been painted or varnished.
