    Default cheap VFD

    Gday All.
Ive been toying with the idea of adding a VFD and 3 phase motor to my drill press. Not super serious but I got a email from Alixpress last week and they had a small (and cheap) VFD listed for an introductory price of $40.65 with free shipping.
I decided to live dangerously and I ordered one. For some reason the final price for me was less than $40.
Figured that losing $40 if its a pile of rubbish wont break the bank.
    Time will tell I guess.

Hope it works OK for you, let us know how you get on with it, please.
I hope the instructions are in more detail than the last set that I had to work with.

Silly question. Would these work on a Hercus Mill Motor?

    Kryn.
I've set my expectations extremely low for this one so wont bother me too much if it ends up in the bin.

I'm no expert , This particular VFD is only 0.75Kw.
The HuanYang I have on my BP clone is a 3kw (I think from memory). The motor I have on the mill is a 2.2Kw.

I have 2 of these mini VFD's, they do work OK but the panel mount flange was a bit of a pain for my applications. I only use them for very small motors

I've got a VFD on the drill press. The one I'm using I got for free (..don't ask) but it does the job. It's great having the variable speed ,and not having to mess with belts. I usually left the drill press in a "good enough for everything" speed because I couldn't be bothered moving the belts.
Someone asked me to help with a Vevor VFD a little while ago. I suggested that they send it back, which they did. It only had half a dozen parameters that you could change and was missing the important ones like motor detail inputs.
The VFD you linked seems to have good functionality so hopefully will be ok. I'll see if I can find a manual.
You can't complain about the price though.

Edit: I found a manual, for a 400W version but looks the same. Pretty basic but you should be able to set it up ok.

That VFD has two good and one bad review. The bad review says "It is not as described in the order is Gerand 220V 14kHz very weak false advertising an expensive cheap" whatever that means.
I might get one and take it apart and see what the quality the components are. There's no was they will be using quality Caps or IBGTs.

    Default Update.

My ell Cheapo VFD arrived today. 12 days since I ordered it. Cant complain about that.

Aliexpress appear to have lifted their game a bit since I last bought from them. Once I placed the order, every time this thing moved I got an email telling me where it was.

The vfd itself appears t me reasonably well made. (just looking at the outside - no idea what its like inside)

Even the manual appears to be well written in English.

Now I just have to pull my finger out and convert the motor I have from star to delta.

    Default Another update

Some time ago I bought a used 730W Asea 3 phase motor with the view to putting it on my drill press with a VFD

Over the last couple of days I converted this motor from Star connection to Delta. Just did some research here on this forum (Thanks to all who contributed information about this process, via a number of threads ) and watched some videos on how to do it.

First time I have ever really gotten into an electric motor like that. I didn't realise how small the wires are.

Luckily the Asea motor is very well made and the common point for the star connection is already in the terminal box.
I just had to pull that back to the windings, separate the three wires, extend and insulate them, and then run them back up to the terminal box.

I had to change the terminal block though, as the original only had 4 connections and I needed 6. (the OEM actually has 6 holes but they are a special connector.) I could have made something to fit but I just pinched the 6 connection one from the old mill motor (which I'm going to scrap anyway)

Got all that done and the motor back together this morning. Made the required links to join the windings. Wired it all up to the VFD and gave it a try.

Happy to report no breakers tripped, no smoke came out, and the motor ran beautifully.

    Pretty happy with that.

I haven’t played with any settings yet. I just had a quick look at the factory settings and ran with that as a start point.

So far I'm pretty impressed with the El cheapo VFD. Even the user manual is easy to read and understand. It been written in good English and not Engrish like some are.

They look like good value at that price, I'm tempted to order 2 or 3 of them.
