Default Single phase motor that got wet

The small single phase pump we use for the garden has got a big wet in all the rain recently. I went to use it and it was tripping the RCD in the switchboard.
Getting about 0.3M ohms when tested with the megger, and has definitely had water inside.

What are my chances of it coming right once it’s dried out?

    70% chance of coming good?

    (just a guess)

I imagine the electrical leakage was in the terminal box.
The windings themselves still look to be well insulated.

Carefully scrape some of the salt out, blow the salt/water/dirt out, sit it in the sun, and re-test!

It looks to have a lot of dirt build up. I would give it a good wash with clean water. If you have access to an oven I would bake on very low heat for a few hours, if not sun dry. There is a high chance it will work. Bearings may need lubrication or replacement.

Was it meggered with all the terminals attached or on the bare leads on the windings as pictured ?

Dirt and moisture on the uninsulated terminals is often an issue but if it was on the bare leads it indicates that the insulation on the windings may be compromised.

You could varnish the windings after they are clean and dry.

Thanks guys. Sounds like it’s probably worth persevering with.

I did the initial megger test with the terminals still on, but it’s the same when tested with just the bare windings.

If you want to do it properly:
Clean, dry, oven bake then re-varnish and bake again.

Otherwise dry it out, plug it in and watch for smoke

Just to tidy up the thread - I dried it out for a few days and it was much better - about 30M ohm with a 500v megger test.
It then sat in the shed until today when I reassembled it and performed a smoke test.
It passed and is now back in service

    Thanks all…
