    Hi Tim,

Some of the speed controllers are quite simple ! Not so the BLDC ones. These have to match the original one.
You need to check which type you have on your machine.

    Hi Tim,

You really need to have a look at the machine manual that you got with your machine to identify which kind of motor drive system that you have. I know that both motor systems were fitted to the Seig machines.

The mention of stopping and starting suggests that you have an older machine with a brushed motor !

If this is the case then I would be looking at replacing the motor carbon brushes, which is a very common point of the problems that you describe. The other but more unlikely issue is the speed control potentiometer itself. They do wear and become intermittent, replacing one is quite straightforward if that is the case.

Tim, It seems that you posted the answer to my question whilst I was still typing

In that case the first step is to examine the carbon brushes and replace them if the are worn.

Tim, I had the same problem once on my X2. It was the speed control pot. I bit of a play with the shaft allowed the innards to firmly connect. Problem solved. Check that there is no swarf in the motor control boxes also.
