Default Beaver Milling Machine Motor question.

Would I be correct in saying that this motor cannot be easily converted to run on a 240V single phase input VFD and still produce 3HP?

I think you may be correct given its a 400 - 440v delta wound motor.

Ultimately you really would prefer to see that nameplate say 400 - 440V star. That way you can reconfigure it to run 240V delta and still put out the required HP.

However, if the price is right then perhaps it is worth your while to look for another motor?

    Hi Lex, Guys,

You would need a 230 volt input VFD with a 420 Volt three phase output to use that motor at its full potential !

Thanks Simon and Baron, that's what I thought, unfortunately it is a custom made flange mount specific to the machine.

    Hi Lex,

I'm a little confused ! Is that the original Beaver mill Motor ? Or is it one you are thinking of obtaining.

Brooks motors made many different motors but tended to use common castings for the end frames for the particular sizes. So a 3 Hp single phase motor would have the same frame casting used for all the voltage variants. Only the stator frame internally would be different and of course the rotor.

Now having said that they did make motors to suit specific customer requirements, such as different end frames used for face mountings and the like.

So its quite possible that a standard 3 Hp Brooks motor of a different voltage could have the end frame swapped.

It is the original motor Baron, here's a picture of the flange mount:
