I recall that triac speed controllers have been discussed before, they are based on a basic lamp dimmer and while they do vary the speed of a treadmill motor they do not have any form of feedback from the motor to the controller - put some load on the motor - it slows down - the controller is not aware and so does not try to compensate for the speed drop. There may be situations where this is not an issue, but I'm guessing that probably for most metal working machinery it would be unacceptable.
A 'universal ac/dc motor' ie the brush motor types found in mains operated drills and angle grinders are a different kettle of fish and do work acceptably well with SCR type speed controllers - the back emf voltage generated by of the motor is used as a feedback signal so the controller is able to compensate for load on the motor.

Hi Familyguy, Guys,
Its all about the amount of energy under the curve and part of the reason why a large amount of capacitance is required with an SCR/Triac type controller when driving a large DC motor. A PWM type power supply using a DC source will always be superior.
But you are right there is no controlling feedback to stabilise the motor power output unless it is specifically catered for.Best Regards:
Baron J.
