I will jump on board about connon motor. I two am another happy customer. I had a few issues about setup and rang them. They were very helpful and steered me in the right direction.

So back to your original question about if it is worth it. For me I think so. If I am turning a bit of unknown steel i can dial the speed up or down a bit and find a speed where it is happy cutting. It is also great if you finish a cut and want to wind it up to maximum revs for a quick polish.

When I set mine up I put a three speed pulley on it. The middle speed does 90% of what I need. If for some reason I want super slow or crazy fast I will do a change with the belt.

If you have the space don't be afraid to go for a slightly bigger motor. That way you will have good power at low speed.

I had a look at Conon's website; very interesting! The 0.55Kw 3 ph.motor that you show & the BD600 VFD to drive it (F1-H100S20007BXO, is that correct??) are a not unreasonable price, bearing Danshell's comment about the certainty of them working together.
Would you be able to photograph the new motor & belt drive, & VFD main box installation on your SB lathe & post them here?
Perhaps I should stop further work on the original step-down arrangements until I've weighed this up further?

Hi Yes that is the model VFD I bought. The website image is different to the actual VFD but the model number is correct.

It is a little difficult getting photos due to the lathe being against the wall but I tried. I can still move my cone pulley belt around on the lathe to change the configuration but I dont need to. (i really should have the belt on the right hand side, or smaller drive pulley) and the larger pulley that the motor drives has a step up but again I dont change that either now.
And likewise, the VFD install is just under the bench out of the way, so I took the cover off and got a photo of the massive amount of wires running out of it for you.

Let me know if that helps.

    Default VFD Drive

Danshell & Reidy 41 - Your comments & photos re: the VFD installation are a huge help.
I did wonder if you'd done away with the whole step-down pulley arrangement & gone directly from the motor to the main spindle, but I see that's not the case.
I have today just about finished the main part of the Sheraton rebuild, i.e. the 'lathe' section (Will post a few more photos over in that area soon), so I'm moving on to the 'drive' bit next....

I did watch about a third of Bob L's Men's Shed video about VFD's etc, but ran out of time the other day. I'll finish it very soon. I'm a Men's Shed member on the opposite corner of the country.

Thanks very much to all for your assistance.

Another thing you might find useful is the "VFDs for Newbies" PDF located in the woodies forum

I think you need to be a member to be able to download the document.

I wanted to keep my lathe as original as I could so I left everything in place. Besides the modern looking VFD hidden under the bench it looks like it belongs in a better era
