FWIW I have been in contact with Steve and offered to run my meters over the motor but he has already moved on to using another motor.

My understanding is that non-fixed electrical work is allowed to be performed by an unlicensed person, provided they are "competent". Non-fixed meaning anything with a plug. I believe Qld is the only state that doesn't allow this. As for competent, I expect the only person you'd need to prove that to is a coroner.

Sadly he's right. Any "competant" person can perform electrical wiring on a appliance connected by a plug and cord.

Hell in Victoria a caravan is deemed to be an appliance....

OK, but what is the definition of competent for the purposes of the Act/Regs?

I'll take your word for that. However, even if it's true, my understanding is you can't repair your own appliances in VIC. So you still can't do your own 240V caravan wiring.

After a little bit of Googling the only reference I can find to "competent person" with respect to electrical wiring relates to Test & Tag personnel.
I say you can't legally repair electrical appliances unless you are licensed.

I would LOVE to be wrong.

This is just for NSW, but it defines electrical work, then an electrical installation, and what that does not include.

    Under the not included is:
any electrical article connected to, and extending or situated beyond, any electrical outlet socket

    https://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/t...ons/electrical

I believe most appliance repair people are not licensed (although even less sure what happens in Qld), which makes sense, as the skills required to repair a welder are completely different to installing a Tastic.

    Such repartee.

I believe we still don't have a definitive answer on whether a non-licensed person can legally fit a plug to an appliance (in this case a motor). Clearly the requirements vary by State. Even if a particular state doesn't require a license (i.e. NSW), there seems to be a requirement for the person to be competent. And I can't find a definition of competent for the purposes of performing one's own appliance repair.

    Anyone found one?

    Hi Guys,

My concern over this was simply from a safety point of view !

You cannot fit five wires into a three pin plug safely. You have to have some method of connecting all five wires in such a way that it is safe to handle.

The suggestion I made to use an insulating box where all five wires could be safely terminated and the desired three wires brought out to a plug was one way of doing it !

A competent person is one that has an understanding of and about what they are doing ! This implies that they are knowledgeable. The OP obviously didn't understand, which is why he asked here and then subsequently decided not to continue with the idea.

    JMTPW.
