Hi Mal, Guys,
My bad ! I've always understood that a single phase motor with a capacitor permanently in series with one winding and no method of disconnecting it to be a start capacitor. Since its sole purpose is as you say to determine the phase shift between it and the run winding.
A side benefit is that the motor is easily reversible !Best Regards:

I have a multitool with a 200mm contact wheel it is very low to start so I just spin it then switch it on yes I know it is not correct but it has been working this way for at least 20 years
