Default An Accident Waiting To Happen?

I don't have a lot of time for safety nazis. I believe you should do what you want in your own workshop as long as you don't endanger others. But this video raised my eyebrows. Watch the first 1:30. It's almost like he wants to lose a finger.

Questionable, yeah, but no hate from me.
I'm cacky handed with a grinder, hold it open side to the RHS, trigger finger on my right hand, stabilise with the left (usually on the gearbox body of the grinder), shoot sparks away from me. Some people would probably have something to say about me looking over the top of the grinder to line up the cut.

That's a real PITA when using angle grinders and was a primary driver for me to make the the kerf cut off table saw.

    Several points come to mind.

As a left hander I would not dream of holding an angle grinder in that manner. Its asking for trouble,

If the handle is re positioned to the other side he can both control the switch with his left hand and steady the grinder with the right hand. My angle grinders are set up that way.

As at least 10% of the population are left handed is it about time manufactures made left handed power tools?

At least he has a guard fitted, pretty rare in that part of the world, no way I would put my fingers there though

Wait ! Do I hear something?

Is it the sound of some Yank "ambulance chaser" attorneys gleefully rubbing their hands together in collective anticipation of lucrative work ?

If you think back a few years you may well recall the case where someone in 'Merica was awarded a large settlement from a well known fast food company.

It seems no one warned the drive through customer it was not safe to place a scalding cup of coffee between their legs and subsequently the obvious happened.

Extrapolate that incident to the sort of legal case where the injured plaintiff can produce a Utube video displaying the similar action that his lawyer says, caused some fingers to be amputated and hey we have a lawsuit. We have all seen those types of head scratching judgements before, from the land of lawsuits.
When things go pear shaped that type of thin cutting disc can do exactly what it is designed to do, irrespective of whether it is meat or metal.

Yeah! Yeah! I know there was a disclaimer but I reckon that may only serve to reduce the payout a bit.

Many of us have probably something that was potentially extremely unsafe, but having done it, we didn't jump on the net and tell the body world about it. Any way time will tell?

Sort of related are the blokes who demonstrate tig welding and do that in short gloves and bare arms - SHEEESH!!- Study comparative UV outputs of the three processes stick, mig and tig and you get an idea of what I am on about.

Its the poor beggars who are new, starting from scratch ,so to speak and they go straight to the utube for cheap, quick knowledge, whom I fear might be affected.

I used to cringe when I watched the Binky people drilling sheet metal, hand held, in a drill press. But they've seemed to get away with it for 34 episodes...

I've never had an issue cutting straight with the 5" grinder but the 9" was starting to get a bit much, especially when cutting in strange positions. So I came up with the idea of a bracket to turn the existing side handle to a better orientation. Makes a world of difference and is easily removed for grinding work. The Metabo already has a threaded boss on the top of the gear case but putting the handle there would only work for a left-handed person.

Well Gavin that was timely, about to do a bit of concrete cutting with the 9" think I may may copy that.

While I absolutely cringe at him holding the grinder with his finger inside the guard, I think you have to give him a bit of credit for taking what he has found to be a good controllable holding position and (as I see it) making it safer.

    Nice solution, Gavin.
Can I also see a rubber bush in the screw mount or is my imagination?

Grahame, the bracket is solid mounted to the grinder with M14x2 SHCS and the handle screws into a threaded boss on the bracket. The Metabo handle has an anti-vibration section as standard (the red bit) so I did not need to duplicate it.

It's one thing to use a questionable practice in private, another to show others how to do something that is extremely risky. The audience could be anyone. Quite disturbing the way I see it.

I wouldn't put up with that in a workplace. I reported someone on safety matters to a supervisor once in my career (25 odd years) and that was because they put their life at risk, the guy had kids and I was seriously concerned for him and his family (he had no technical aptitude at all and was poking his fingers inside a live electrical chassis). But I'd do the same if I saw this practice.
