Garages sale - she must have known something
We had to go out for a while this morning and passed a "garage sale" sign. My lovely wife Linda asked if I wanted to have a look but I said "no I don't want to buy any more c**p".
So fast forward an hour or so and on the return trip I tried to sneak past, thinking to myself "I bet she says shes wants to have a look". Of course with in a couple of nano seconds of me thinking that, Linda says "come on, lets have a look" lol.
So I did a Uee and headed back. Turns out it was a deceased estate. Apparently Dad had passed away some time ago and Mum had never been able to get rid of any of his stuff. So now the kids had to get rid of everything (Familiar story).
So anyway, lots of the usual kitchenalia stuff but quite a lot of old tools in the back of the shed. Sadly a cantilever tool box with contents that was almost a solid block of rust.
However there was a smallish Paulco vertical band saw. A lot of surface rust but not badly corroded. I wasn't really interested in going over to the dark side, but I asked the price and he said "how about $50?"
I hummed and hahed a bit then Linda said "it would be a good project for you". So ok.
I had to leave her there there as a deposit while I raced home to grab a bit more cash and empty the back of the ute out.
Turned out it wasn't as badly rusted as I had initially thought. All but one of the adjusting screws are free, the old motor still runs and the wheels turn freely.
The main frame is all Cast Iron and the wheels cast Aluminium.
I've heard the name Paulco but know nothing else about them. Apart from the badge on the wheel guard there doesn't appear to be any other information on it.
Does anyone else know anything about them? Before anyone asks, as yet I haven't started searching. That's my project for tonight.
The benefit of having a ute tray that's 1600 long inside.

Forgot to say that's a nice bandsaw. Now you have to make it as pretty as the one I linked to.

Hahah. Luckily for me, Linda is my best mate as well as my wife. The sadder part is I managed to let her get away 40 years ago and we both ended up with what eventually turned out to be the wrong person.
We reconnected in 2010 and got married in 2012. Best thing I've ever done.

Hi bollie7
Paulco an Aussie company, made some good stuff in its time.
I have got a few woodworkers tools made by them.
All are good quality. A lot of the stuff I have seen had cast aluminium components.
Your Paulco bandsaw will be well worth the few dollars you paid for it, I am sure.

Pauls was a tool and light machinery shop in the forties and early fifties in George Street when I was living in Sydney. Paulco was a trade name for some of the machinery and tools they sold. As far as I know they were not manufacturers: I think they put their label on machinery from other sources. Not sure of this though.
In the post war period when Australia was short of US dollars and American tools were not generally available, Pauls was also a source of good quality hand tools from non-dollar sources. I still have a set of Swedish E A Berg wood chisels, a couple of pairs of their pliers, and sundry other tools of the same brand, which I bought in the late forties or early fifties, and have given excellent service. They also sold several of the better brands from the UK, and a good selection of Australian manufactured tools from a lot of now extinct companies. I was sorry in a visit to Sydney in the sixties, I think it was, to find that Pauls was no more: it had always been a go-to place on visits to Sydney.
Frank.

Grahame. I'm sure you are correct. I remembered last night I have one of their G clamps as well.
I've just been having a closer look at the saw. Apart from surface rust from sitting for who knows how many years in a shed only a few klm from the ocean, its in fairly good condition. Everything moves freely.
I also discovered that the extendable blade guard (not sure if that's the correct name for it) appears to have spent most of its life fully retracted inside the front of the wheel guard. So its got a very good example of the original colour in side it. I should be able to take that to a paint place and get it colour matched.
I'm looking forward to making a start on it. Just have to get a few other things out of the way first. Will probably wait until the weather warms up a bit.

Frank, I remember visiting Paul's with my Dad.
I was born 1967, so that was probably in the early seventies.
I think it moved over a street or two from its original George St
(Queen Victoria building?) location.

Pauls was still there (second location sounds right) a few years after Australia had converted to metric units. When "metrication" was actually in place (in eng and technical circles) I remember going into Pauls looking for some metric screws and having the gall to ask if they had any. The old bloke serving told me that I would be dead before that happened. Gave up trying after that.
