    Default Flooded

Not the only one and not the worst, but I have been flooded. High set house and upstairs is very safe. Under house where I have a lot of stuff and some not put up higher so as not to not get wet, because I have been a bit slack from previous episodes of this. Going to take a bit of cleaning up after the water drains away. To make things worse the shower downstairs has flow from sewer backing up into it and have had to put a pump in the shower tray to stop extra flow under the house. Shower tray is quite deep, so a small pond pump has worked for now, despite being very slow. Plumber cleaned pipes in case of blockage but that made things worse. Suspect large volume of storm water in the main sewer or a blockage as well. Unity Water make take days to get here to check for problems

    Hi Guys,

After the recent heavy rains, there is about 2 feet of water on the flood plain from the river right up to the road behind us ! Fortunately we are quite a few feet above that area. In one place, next to the main road, where they have been cleaning and opening the ditches, the digger that they were using is submerged to within a couple of feet of the top of the cab. I bet someone is going to be upset about that !

Was talking to one of my brothers today. Land across road from him, up a small access road between the houses on opposite side to him has been sold and and will be developed into a huge amount of units. Drainage will be a problem, so they dug up the street to install new storm water pipes. Not finished yet and after the heavy rain we have had here, they were back today dumping tons of gravel, rock etc to try and stop the whole street disappearing down the hill.

Tomorrow I am thinking of boring a large hole in the concrete floor under the house big enough to drop the submersible pump into. The floor is absolute crap and cracked everywhere, which allows the water to come through from beneath. After I drain a lot of the water, which will take a while, because the back yard slopes toward this area I will consider a permanent pump setup with a float switch for next time. What worries me about this is, will I possibly undermine this area and create a bigger problem, like the house falling into a big hole. I suppose I could make some sort of pit to drop the pump into so just water and not anything else is removed. Over to the engineers here now.

I might add that most of the under house area at rear of house is actually about 30cm below back yard level. Its a highset house on a brick base. Water never actually comes through the wall itself because it is pretty well sealed, but rather up through the floor when the ground gets soaked. Has happened about four or five times in twenty three years I have been here. Front of under house area is roughly level with the front yard.

    Hi Nev,

You need something like a bottomless dustbin or large diameter round pipe to drop your pump into ! A couple of houses down the marsh have sumps like that to stop or reduce water ingress. You do need somewhere to drain the water into though. Although most of the marsh is below river level, there is a large banking that separates the houses from the flood plain.

Submersible pump has died. Got a bigger one somewhere, but can't find it. No hoses to fit anyway. This rain just keeps pouring down.

    G'Day All,
Here are a few images of the aftermath of this totally disastrous & devastating flood that has all but washed Lismore (2480) away. The previous highest recorded floods were in 1954 & 1974. Both had river heights of 12.14 metres. So, the business & general communities moved their goods to above this height. Unfortunately, this flood reached 14.4 metres. Many homes & businesses that have never been flooded have lost everything.
The CDB is totally wiped out & these images are were taken as soon as the water receded enough to gain entry my daughter's business premises. Now the CBD is even worst than this, as all business owners have now cleared their shops & offices. The accumulated detritus is beyond description. Every business & home in the Lismore basin has been impacted.
People have died & livelihoods are gone.
Hopefully, Lismore can come back but, it is going to be a very long time.
Fortunately, I live on higher ground & was not affected physically. But, many are not as fortunate.
    Regards,
    Don.

Lots of storms here in Queensland right now to complicate matters as well. Had to have my pump setup running this afternoon. Worst flood I have seen in my lifetime I think. Seems to be much wider spread than any I remember.

    Hi Guys,

What a terrible situation ! I had no idea how bad things were, what with the Ukrainian situation all there was on UK TV about Australian floods was a single cursory mention of them, no pictures at all.

I hope that everything soon gets back to normal.
    Best Regards:
