Default Victorian buying a use car in nsw?

Wife found a car in NSW. We live in Victoria. Has anyone bought a NSW registered car back to Victoria and had it registered in Victoria?
I know I will need a Victorian RWC and pay stamp duty. What happens in NSW?

    Sincerely,
    Tom

Make sure you do a PPSR check on the vehicle to make sure it isn't stolen, or has been written off. Get one through the government site, not the private ones that come up as the first few google hits. If it passes the PPSR, then it depends on the registration status in NSW.

If the car is currently registered in NSW, get the seller to sign the back of the rego papers marked for the buyer, take this half of the rego papers and drive the car home. Get the RWC when you get home and transfer the rego to Victoria.
If it's not registered in NSW, you'll have to arrange an unregistered vehicle permit through Service NSW (or arrange a tow truck) to get it home. The unregistered vehicle permits are cheap and you're covered for third party personal insurance with them. They allow you to drive it from the seller to home via the most direct route, which will be specified on the permit. Get the seller to sign the rego papers and take half, then drive (or get it towed home) then the RWC and transfer to Vic.
    Hope that helps,
    Steve

Just to add to what Steve said. If the car has a bit of NSW rego left on it, don't expect much of a refund when the NSW rego is cancelled. They only refund pro rata on the rego fee which is usually only a small amount when compared to the taxes and levies. They don't refund on the taxes(at least they never used to. Dont think its changed)
    Fancy that.
