Interesting part of my job
I was going through some videos and I came across a couple that might be of interest to others here.
In one of the depts I work for at TAFE, a big part of my job is to keep the Ships Bridge simulator working.
There are 3 cubicles. Two have five 55" monitors and the other has three 48" monitors. In the simulation the monitors represent the windows in the bridge of the ship
It can run three separate exercises at once or 1 exercise where each cubical is a separate vessel that interacts with the others in the simulation.
Currently it uses 25 PC's to run it although we are trying to upgrade it to run on fewer PCS.
The main controls are real ships controls and we also have a real ships ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display & Information System) unit in each cubicle which I installed in the middle of 2020.
Whilst the graphics are not as good as a shootemup game and the cubicle doesnt move like a good aircraft sim, it is still quite realistic. That means if the the conditions are set so the vessel is rolling a bit, the horizon moves. I don't normally suffer from motion sickness but this makes me feel a bit off sometimes. Yes, you can also run aground and even capsize, but it all happens slowly.
You tube links to a couple of short videos from 2020.

Wow that is really impressive, simulating all of a ships systems and loading and ballast would be really intense.

Thanks for the clips Peter. Very Realistic. I was a bit disappointed though, there were NO PIRATES

For those in the area (or heading that way) there is a maritime museum in Devonport (TAS), that has a basic simulator that the public can try out; getting ships in and out of Devonport.
