The MSDS for glycerine is interesting as it says, "may irritate skin and eyes and should not be taken internally" and recommend using A RESPIRATOR AND GLOVES!
Yet, it is used in many edible products and personal products like hand santizers and skin moisturises.
The MSDS does say the fumes (presumably when heated) can irritate nose and lungs and comes with a standard hydrocarbon OHS limit of 10 mg/m^3 (same as mineral oils etc).

Thanks for the info everyone.
When I was an apprentice in the mid 1970's, I remember having to use Litharge & Glycerine to seal pipe joints. No gloves of course, as all we had available were thick leather gloves. As dangerous as the lead oxide is, it does make a very good pipe thread sealant (until you have to undo them of course).

Another hand cleaner
Hi . I have been using a hand cleaner called LN770 hand and body shampoo made by Advance Chemicals in Altona for the last 15 years. It removes grease and grime readily but does not de-fat your skin even when used many times per day. The last I bought was $60 for a 20 litre drum ( if you have an NBN). It does come in 5 litre containers. I decant it into a small pump pack. I have no connection to the company.
Cheers Borriss

1) The best one I have seen is the "Marlin" cleaner on the right.
The most impressive thing was the pump. Kept working for the full 5L !
The gel has a mixture of grit sizes, and an orange (skin?) oil based degreaser.
It was a little rough on my skin if I used it 10 times a day, but works better than Solvol™.

Sadly, they seem to have run out
2) Next best is the Loctite on the left. Available from several places, about $45.
Abrasive grit sizes are smaller (fine pumice), and the pump partially clogged up once,
but the creamy goo gets thru ground in grease OK.
3) Next is Solvol™. $40 from Bunnings.
Gel has nice creamy feel, but pump fails after a few days

Plain old bar of Solvo works better than their liquid stuff, like someone said above washing power/liquid works great for heavy soiling but it can damage your skin.
You could always don some latex gloves for 1/2hr or so and sweat it out wont clean out under the nails though....................................................................

For really dirty hands clean engine oil works wonders and then the hand cleaner of choice to finish the job. I have been using Amway LOC for many years and it always works followed by a hand cream. I have seen quite a few mechanics suffer serious skin issues because they did not thoroughly clean their hands every day. My father worked on heavy diesel equipment and he drummed into me the message that hands had to be free of all dirt and grease every day and I have passed that message on to my son who is a technician as well.

Just a heads up that the additives in especially modern engine oils are a known "skin defatting agent" and skin irritants so anyone using it as a cleaner its should use it as quickly as possible. This is one reason why mechanics are increasingly required to wear gloves.
