    Hi Guys,

Just an update ! I went for my first eye check up following the cataract surgery. My right eye is now brilliant and I can see way better than I used to, I can actually read the smallest test letters with my right eye and a correction lens for my left one.

The optician has put me forward for an urgent appointment for my left eye cataract surgery, though he did warn me that it could be as long as four months before they could take me in. Which is why he has put it down as urgent on the application.

That is great news John, I hope the next operation goes as well as this has, and that the wait is not too long. With all that has been going on in your health system over there, a wait of only four months is really pretty remarkable I think. All the best,
    Rob.

I had an injury to my left eye some 52 years ago. Had to be very careful when moving head...not allowed pepper or anything that could make me sneeze, not allowed to strain in any way....as these things put pressure on the eye both internally and externally. 6 months later I had one of the first lens implant in Adelaide. Same I was not allowed to strain or sneeze. The lens's back then are not what they use today nor are they put in the same place...mine when behind the cornea and in front of the iris...today they are inserted into the void left by the old lens, which is behind the iris.

Wife has just finished having her last one done...she is very happy...very little discomfort after both ops...and none now.

    Default New Surgery Date !

    Hi Guys,

I got the date today for the surgery on my left eye ! The 9th June.
The hospital must be getting nervous about C19, they have said that I have to have a test and isolate for ten days. I have to wear a mask and bring a spare one when I go to the hospital !!!

Can I ask what lenses you are using? I’ve been waiting for over 6 months now for the Alcon Vivity EDOF lens to be available in my size in Australia; my next review is in July and if it still isn’t available I’ll have to reconsider what to go for. My other preferred choice is the Occulentis Femtis EDOF but I'll probably have to travel to Brisbane or Sydney for those.

    Hi Chief,

Good question ! I really don't know the manufacturer. I had a choice of three lens types, Long focus, Short focus or varifocal. I've chosen Long focus which like short focus don't cost me anything, however varifocal do and are expensive.

But I will ask the question on Wednesday when I go to the hospital.

    Default Corrective 'Early' Cataract Surgery

Good to hear another success story regarding cataract surgery.
(poor old NHS though: 'Bring a spare mask')
My partner has just had hers done and couldn't be happier. She's been wearing reading glasses for quite a while and, after a detailed conversation with her surgeon, decided to go for the 'one eye long, the other eye close' corrective lenses. Top result and and not as strange as it might seem, since it appears that your brain is typically only using one eye at a time for most of its work anyway, with the less-dominant eye adding periperal and the all-importand distance information. It soon gets used to using the best eye for the job at hand (well, so I've been told by our optitian). Her reading glasses went straight in the bin and she hasn't looked back (so to speak).
The optitian says that the surgeons can correct astigmatsm these days too, with lenses that are inserted with precise vertical alignment to very accurately correct the out-of-round problem with the rest of the system. They can combine this with the long/near correction too, which means I now become a candidate for this correction, which is not easy to resolve with any other single solution.
Now, I'm not suffering from cataracts but it seems that everyone over a 'certain age' has some evidence of cataract sysmpoms, so 'early cataract surgery' is a bit of a lurk, since cataract surgery is covered by Medicare and corrective surgery of this type is elective.
If I can get through the administrative hurdles, I'll be going for it within the next 12 months.
I'm really looking forward to wearing simple sunglasses and straigforward ppe in the workshop, on my motorbike and bicycle, after more than 50 years of corrective lenses and three or four attemts at contact lenses.

    Thumbs up Left Eye Done!

    Hi Guys,

Its nearly 11:00 here in the UK and I'm back from having surgery on my left eye !

A different surgeon and a different experience ! The surgery wasn't any more painful but I could sense that this surgeon didn't break up the cataract ultrasonically like the first one, but simply removed it whole in one piece flushed out the cavity and inserted the lens. Quite a different sensation and a far quicker operation. In hindsight I would have preferred the first one, but you don't get to choose, simply because you don't have this information unless someone tells you beforehand.

To Chief Tiff, the lens manufacturer is "Bourns" ! They specialise in soft adaptable generic lens meaning that they adapt to the shape of the eye and require that external glasses are used to provide long or short sight correction.

In my case I have chosen to have long sight lens, meaning the I will need a pair of glasses for close up work !

I'll report again in a few days and let everyone know how I am getting on.
    Best Regards:
    Baron J.

    Hi Guys,

I said that I would report back in a few days ! First many thanks to you all for your good wishes !

Its now been a week since the surgery and the slight bloodshot has gone and my eye has healed nicely. The steroid drops that I have to use four times a day really help with any irritation I get.

I went for long sight lens in both eyes, my ability to see properly when driving is markedly improved ! However until I get my spectacles sorted out any close up work is a real struggle, even with a magnifying glass seeing a micrometer reading is difficult. I simply hadn't realised just how much I relied on just one eye to see close up.

I now have to wait for 30 days before I can have an eye test and new glasses for close up work !

Thanks again Guys your support is greatly appreciated.
    Best Regards:
    Baron J.

That is looking good John, bad pun fully intended. We are pleased to hear that it has gone well for you, and other than some difficulty with close up work, your eyesight is generally improved from before. From what you have said in a months time you will be able to have an eye examination and new specs prescribed, so then you will have your near vision back as well. All in all very good news. Cheers from downunder,
    Rob.

    Hi Guys,

Well I've been and had my vision checked and apart from needing a prescription for reading or close working lens everything is fine. So the result is that I've been discharged from the hospital but need to return for annual eye checks !

Now I need to obtain some spectacles ! It will be nice to get back to been able to see close up properly.
    Best Regards:
