    Hi Steve, I'm not 100% certain on this, but I'd say they had a boring head that has the ability to expand itself once in the hole. One brand is Waulteper or something similar, someone may chime in with the correct spelling of it.
    A friend of mine has a boring head that is capable of this type of work.

    A Wohlhaupter can do simple tapers but it cannot do a radius, the machining operation on the carrier requires specialized production equipment and is done on CNC machines these days, video attached, I would like to see how it was done in the early years of automotive manufacturing.

    This is CNC, but its just a form cutter plunge - no toolpath control.

    Could be done on a manual machine with a boring bar and form tool.

    When you get into volume manufacture, it is a whole different ball game to the job shop/hobby machining most of us a used to. There are lots of very specialized machines out there that are extremely good at making the part they are designed for. so if you ever look at a mass produced part and wonder how it was machined on a lathe or mill, it might have been made on a specialized machine.
