Way back in the day imagine my surprise when I discovered me HT Brougham had a radio made in Japan - and yes, it were the original radio.
Dunno if we can blame Dick for any thing. We all bought imported stuff - it were left to somebody else to buy Australian..
Couple of years back I bought a replacement tail light for me SS ute from the Holden dealer and found made in china printed on the box.....

Humm . . . . . . I'm not holding my breath. Brand ownership might stay in Oz but once Twiggy's accountants have their say, . . . . . look at what happened to Rossi and now partially to Steel Blue boots.
My understanding is that all of Rossi's production and some of Steel Blue stuff is now made is Asia.

Dick has a different view of what happened.

As they say, there's two sides to a story.

two sides
That's a interesting read . But you could ask yourself the question: Would Dick have become fabulously wealthy if Whitlam had not lowered the import tariff on import electronic goods ? Probably not . In other words Dick took advantage of the lowered tariffs and made a bundle. Asia makes the best electronics , that's open for debate , some of it is excellent but we should be aware of things like the absolute crap Asian made 240V household lamps and pedestal fans that were sold here , I mean dangerous stuff .

Perhaps the thread should be renamed to ‘The Dick Smith’ thread...

Vaguely remember a bit of corporate fraud....which is probably a trivial sum nowadays....dealt a lot of that business the death sentence. On the other hand, briefly attended their radio school back in the late 70s, which was in a 30/40s era building in Marrickville from memory, to learn to use a near obsolete technology.

From record profits in 1965 to a storage place for imports...
“...Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia) Ltd intended to retrench 500 workers from its Ashfield plant between now and March, the NSW State Labor Council's industrial officer, Mr J., MacBean, said today.
The action resulted from the Federal Government's tariff policies and unless help was given by the Industries Assistance Commission it was possible that the company would have to retrench the remaining 1,500 employees at Ashfield, he said.
Mr MacBcan said the company had filed two submissions with the commission seeking assistance in relation to telephone and telecommunication components.
The company had told him that if its financial difficulties were not overcome it would have to stop production at Ashfield and use the premises as storage space for imports...”

May have been in Ashfield, although I don't remember lawns and gardens as in the historic images, just an expanse of bitumen for parking.
That trove article, 15k for a secondary principal - and if I recall, around a 60% marginal tax rate on that amount back then too, ha.
