Default Mobile phone numbers in posts

    TO all members,
There is a nasty scam going around where someone on a land line from overseas calls your mobile - really briefly and a missed call appears on your mobile.

If you don't recognise it as an OS number and return the call you can be up for big dollars on your mob phone bill.

Unless you know the number - DON'T return the call - your call is delayed put on hold etc and you wear a huge bill.

The number will have a prefix OTHER THAN +61 which is Australia.
It was tried with me 5 times from 5 different overseas phone numbers. My mobile phone provider confirmed this when I contacted them.

Please don't put your mobile number in a post. You are begging for problems.

Where people put their mobile number in a post I remove it if I see it and contact them.

    Hi Grahame,

These calls are intended to trick you into making a premium rate call. My number is not on any forum or anywhere else for that matter, but I've had several of those types of call ! I just ignore them.

The problem is that unless you have your number hidden, anyone that you call can have their phone hacked and their telephone book copied.

I know of a case where it cost a parent £300 because their child called a premium rate number !
    Best Regards:

From what I have been able to glean by reading looking at the various sites that talk about scams, ACCC and the like, the scam relies on you replying to the missed call .It appears as a missed call on your smart phone.

On a couple of occasions when my mobile rang for only a few moments I was able to pick it up and there was no answer to my hello hello and a hung up.

It is my understanding that the charges dont come until you tap that missed call number. From that moment of connection you are charged and charged exorbitantly.

If you are worried, don't just take my word, check it out with your mobile telephone provider. If you get a call report the number/s to your provider or the ACCC.

I did not hear it but a friend said there was mention of it, was on the national news. I surmise if enough people report the offending numbers that the calls originate from, a group of those offending numbers could well be monitored and then blocked.

After the initial spate of overseas missed number calls over a few days , the calls then stopped. Mind you, I did block those numbers on my mobile phone.
