Default Sit on the ground and do nothing while wearing the correct PPE

After reading numerous threads and replies I would assume unfortunately that this internet forum and all others like it will be ceasing operations, even this may not even appear, it may be dangerous, not meeting standards, bad for the eyes, generating electrical heat that may not meet approval by world standards.
If so no one is reading this , if not your time maybe up shortly.
Just seems to me if somebody wants to Grind,Cut,Weld, Build,Derust , not wear a mask, not have ventilation, not have exhaust fans, not know how many parts per million there is in something they should just give it away and turn Into a vegetable.

It is like going to an art gallery and looking at some god awful painting of random paint splotches and wondering what th ehell it means.

I suspect it is about the modern way of life where increasingly offering advice on something you may not be formally qualified on is frowned upon or in some cases illegal.

Just jump over to the renovate forums electrical section to see what I mean. Another computer forum I used to visit for many years was the same.

Easier to stick to more safe topics like an IQ reducing, brain melting discussion about "Married at first sight".

I will admit when I look at modern society I ask myself, what is the point.

We all think of OH&S as being a recent phenomenon but that is not altogether true. I read a story a little while ago of a warrior, Isadas, from Spartia (which is part of modern day Greece) from around 350 BC. Isadas was exercising naked at home(as was the custom) when he saw invading troops in the street. He grabbed his spear and sword, rushed into the street and hurled himself into the thick of the battle striking down one opponent after another. The invaders were beaten off and the council of elders first awarded Isadas a bravery award for his valour in battle and then fine him 1000 Drachma for fighting without his protective gear as he risked death and injury.
    So blame the ancient Spartans.

    Here's the counter-rant.

What you do doesn't just affect you, it affects everyone around you and plenty of people who aren't around you too.

If you lose an eye because you've decided that you don't need/want to wear glasses while hot chips/sparks are spraying everywhere, your family have to deal with it as much as you do. Your kids might miss out on playing sports with their dad because you've got no depth perception any more. You might not be allowed to drive (or have a restricted licence) for the same reason. Not to mention all the medical staff and resources that I have funded with MY tax dollars that will be spent fixing you up. You might end up having to claim unemployment and/or disability benefits for a while if you have an extended time off work or if you have to find another job, I pay for that with MY taxes as well. I don't particularly care to have those resources directed away from those who genuinely need them and put towards caring for people who have decided that safety isn't cool or convenient or somehow treads on their god given right to be a moron if they want to be.

Same goes for (motor)cyclists without helmets and riding jackets, people who don't wear seat belts, people who use criminally under-guarded machinery/power tools, and all the other cases that I'm sure you can all think of that fall into the same category.

YOU DON'T LIVE IN A BUBBLE. If there's one thing people should be sitting on the ground doing, it's having a good, long think about the potential consequences of their actions on other people instead of trying to stand up to the "nanny state system".

We all do stuff we shouldn't (I know I do) because we keep getting away with it. Until that one time we don't. And then it's too late.

Don't be a hero, be safe.

I second what Elan said, however needs to be properly managed and applied, I have seen situations where the so called protection makes things more hazardous than without it, I can also remember in the Seventies
making school laboratory bench tops from Asbestos and sanding the joins flush with a belt sander. I has to be relative to the risk, my friends would laugh at me when I would use earmuffs when using power drills etc.
I now have to shout at them so they can here what I am saying.

Better not drive a car then.

We can wrap us all up in cotton wool to a far greater level then currently.

I think alcohol being banned for a start would save a huge amount of money. Won't worry me as I seldom drink.

Imagine, if motor bikes had not been invented way back when, and someone came along now with one and tried to get it road registered.

That would also prevent a lot of trauma, pain and stress in a lot of peoples lives. I don't drink at all. (I had a couple of West Coast coolers 30 years ago and ended up getting married to my 1st wife. That turned out to be a disaster for me, even though it took 22 years to manifest itself. )
All jokes aside, over the years I have been ridiculed by some others because I don't drink. Been told to "Be a man and have a beer" "what a wuss - doesn't drink - probably can't hold his drink" etc etc.
Well yeah. I come from a line of men who were nice blokes when sober and total, violent, arseholes when drunk. I've seen holes punched in the wall, busted crockery etc. Never saw, but knew about the missus/relos being beaten up.
There's a very good chance I would be the same with a skinful so I made the decision before I became a teenager not to ever put my self in that situation. (saved a lot of money over the years as well.)
Not my father. He hardly ever drank either probably for the same reason although we never discussed it.
    peter.

Kudos to you for being able to make such a decision at a young age, I don't think I would have thought that far ahead as a teenager.

Can't help thinking that if CASA and the fun police had been around in 1903 the Wright brothers would have remained unknown bicycle mechanics.
