Default Hdmi from TV to laptop vs firestick chromecast roku etc.

I can connect a tv to an old laptop with an HDMI cable and then anything that appears on the laptop screen appears on the tv screen. So any netflix, stan, amazon prime etc etc etc content that you can watch on laptop is squirted to the tv.

Whats the difference between doing this and using one of the roku / chromecast / firestick devices ?

Seems to me that the little stick devices are just a small computer without a screen or keyboard.

Have done some websearching and reading but my understanding has not improved. Any books websites etc I should read to better understand internet videos ?

Too cold to go and play in shed, we briefly had snow yesterday (gippsland)

The difference with the Chromecast etc is that

    A no cable is needed.

B they just stream a link given to them so they do all the rendering work, means you can stream off a phone without using all your battery.

If your TV supports DLNA you can do it wireless without an additional device.
