I did the same with a wild kitten once. No matter how well you think you got hold of them, they still manage to twist and bite. I was lucky and never got an infection.

Dont get bitten by a cat...they carry some very infectious germs on their teeth.
Been known for people to loose digits etc.
AWL people use very long sleeved gloves when removing from trap.
Also known on two occasions to euthenise before getting them out of trap.

If necessary the trap will be operated during the day.
They can claim them back from the AWL but it costs money and that seems to work as an adequate deterrent in my area. The council even lend out the traps.

    Hi Guys,

Last year my wife and I camped on a small aire in a small village called Brezolles in France. Nice place with several apple trees, free water supply and waste disposal. Only one thing spoilt it, the cats, wild feral creatures that attempted to get into the camper, hissing and spitting when I tried to shut them out. One of them actually got its claws into the fabric of my jeans leg, until a clout with a hot kettle sorted it. We didn't stay very long after that, maybe 1/2 hour. Not a nice experience at all.

We called in this year to get some water ! It seems that the local Marie (Council) has cleared the cats out and unfortunately the apple trees as well, laying two nice tarmac drives and hard standing for the campers. Its a much better aire now.
    Best Regards:
    Baron J.

I have to ask John, what is an Aire? It is not a term that I have heard in Australia, or even when visiting Britain and Ireland.
Just on the topic of cats, – we live on a small acreage (12) pretty well all bush, and we don't have cats either for the reason that we like our little birds. I don't dislike cats per se, they are magnificent in almost all respects, great hunters, agile, good mothers to their young, they are smart and really have very few weaknesses. When I was a kid, we had quite a few over the years, and many were affectionate, and happily co-existed with our dogs and pet magpies, but I don't want them here with our prolific small bird population. Some years ago now, as I turned into our drive, I saw a large cardboard box 20 metres or so down the drive. I got out of the car, mentally cursing the thoughtless sod who had not secured his load before heading to the tip. I was surprised to find that the box held a beautiful young - 2 months or so, white kitten. He was friendly and purred when I handled him, but I noticed that he appeared to have broken bones just poking through his skin, just below his bum. A quick trip to the vet who confirmed that both rear legs were broken, although somehow he was able to cover up his injury, and he just stood and rubbed himself against us, all the while purring away quite contentedly, like he hadn't a care in the world. The Vet said that it would be a $600 job fix him, but I said the we didn't want a cat, for the reasons already given. The vet then said that the best course would be to put him down and for me to bury him at home in the compost heap. I was pretty gutted for a couple of reasons, one being that some mongrel had probably caused this kittens injury, and then just put him in a box and then dumped him. The other reason being, that he was a great little kitten, and deserved far better. The vet euthanised him at no charge to me, and I took the poor little blighter home and buried him, but it amazed me how some people can be such mongrels and uncaring of they pets, and possibly the people in their lives as well.

Its not just pets either. Now I know some people don't like possums for what ever reason, but my wife and I have been wildlife rescuers/carers for about 6 years now and we have done mainly possums. Once you get to know about them you realise what wonderful little creatures they are. Just like cats and dogs they all have their distinct personalities.
We live in suburbia but there are a few tree corridors so we have some Brushtail and Ringtail possums around the place. We have got to know "our" wild ones and try to look out for them. They have learnt to trust us as well. I have made a couple of areas in the roof of my shed as drays or sleeping nests and there is usually a couple of ringies there most days. Just before xmas last year two of "our" brushies (father and son) were shot with a slug gun by some . The father (who had been born and grown up in my shed) had two slugs in his abdomen. His son who had only just left his mum had one in his belly and the other one had shattered one of his front legs.
I was easily able to catch them both (the father on one night and his son the next). At that point we didn't know they had been shot but we took them to the vet who xrayed them and discovered the slugs. Both had to be euthanised. We were pretty gutted about that.
The police were as helpful as they could be but its a bit hard when you have no evidence of who has done it.
Last week it started again. I found "our" old mum (mum to the young one killed last xmas) dead in the roof of the shed. When we had a close look we found a slug entry wound. On x ray she too had two slugs in her. She probably took 2 or 3 days to die from peritonitis.
I just don't get why some hero would want to shoot them. I don't know what they get out of it. Again the police cant do much. They are concerned that some one is firing a weapon around the houses but what can you do.
I cant help but wonder why someone who doesn't like wildlife or trees would buy a house in an area with wildlife and trees.

Very sorry to hear of your experiences there Peter, I know possums can make a mess of fruit trees for example, but with some effort they can be fenced out, not easily but it can be done. It is a bit like those who want to cull every shark just because there has been a shark attack. As far as I am concerned, while I realise the tragedy of these attacks, we have to acknowledge that we humans are in their environment, and if you want to surf, or swim at he beach, that is a choice you must make, whether or not to risk a shark attack. Not too many people get shark bights when they are on dry land.

Cat #14 is in my trap this morning.
This is a record for me, I'm on a hat-trick, with this being the 3rd cat in 3 days. I even used the same bait in the trap- a crusty week-old chicken drumstick I found laying in the back of the fridge!

22 with subsonic bullets. Almost as good as using a silencer especially at close range as there is almost no report from the shot. Just a muffled pup sound (not a woof, or even a pop).

Have a friend who was bitten by her own cat. Finger swelled up eventually went to doc after a couple of days of pain and sickness. Ambulance called and she was rushed to hospital where the finger was amputated almost immediately in emergency surgery. Spent the next week on and off life support and was lucky to have survived.

    Hi Rob, Guys,

I have to ask John, what is an Aire? It is not a term that I have heard in Australia, or even when visiting Britain and Ireland.
Its a French word for a stopping place usually free though some charge you, provided specifically for campers and has overnight parking facilities, and a water supply, not always free, usually 2 Euro for 100 Ltr, and Vidanges, waste disposal facilities. You sometimes come across one that has free electricity as well, but more often than not if they had, they have been badly abused and often disconnected.

We visited one this year that had free everything last year. This year they were in the process of disconnecting the electricity and removing the wiring. Last year there were more than forty camper vans (Camping Cars) in French, all plugged in with all sorts of extension cables between them and the electric outlets. This year there were only a few ! There are going to be some very disappointed campers this year. Some of them stay on these Aires for weeks at at time, totally against the regulations of 48 Hours max. But nobody seems to bother policing them.

The ones that you have to pay for are usually gated and you need a credit card to get in ! Often the supply of water is paid for in the same way. They are usually well lit and good tarmacadam hard standing with electric power points.
    Best Regards:
    Baron J.
