car trip computer and fuel consumption
Was thinking about this earlier on tonight. Totally random I know but that's how these things go for me sometimes.
So, we have a 05 Magna Awd that has a trip computer in it. It gives an "at that point in time" (instantaneous?) fuel consumption figure. I was wondering how it works that out. As far as I'm aware they don't have a specific fuel flow sensor (At least I have never seen anything in the workshop manual about one) so I'm wondering how it measures how much fuel is being used at a given point in time.
The only thing I can think of is it knows how long the injectors are open for ( I'm assuming its got sequential injector timing but not even sure about that) and it also knows what the fuel pressure in the fuel rail is and just calculates how much fuel goes through each injector for a given opening time.
Then I suppose it just uses that figure with road speed to work out the consumption.
Any thoughts?

Found this on goggle, and the link to it is below;
The car's trip computer is measuring the fuel injector flow rates, engine temperature, fuel tank float level and other information gathered by the car's computer system.

I was too tired last night. Usually the first thing I do is search the net but last night it didn't even enter my head. Besides it nicer to talk to someone else - even if it is a conversation with a reply delay.
