4 Jaw Chuck Wanted
Smallish 4 jaw chuck wanted, my current lathe has a large 4 jaw chuck which I am increasing finding hard to move. It is 12 inches and heavy construction a lovely chuck but a bear to move around. I am now 73 years of age and no longer as strong as I used to be. What I want is a smaller. lighter chuck independent 4 jaw. My lathe has a D1-6 cam lock headstock which will limit my choices somewhat. A couple of fixes are fit a suitable backing plate to a chuck designed for a smaller one or rig up some sort of crane arrangement. Floating this to see if anyone has a redundant chuck sitting around. I am in Perth but would be willing to arrange a courier if needed. Heres hoping.

How small can you go and still fit the D1-6 camlock? Lathes.co.uk lists the OD at around 165mm (not sure exactly which one it it is), which means at least a 6 1/2" diameter. I think the next size up is probably 8"

Assuming you’ve got a decent 3 jaw, another option is to just grip a smaller 4 jaw in that.

I disagree Michael.
With the caveat that the OP has a decent 3-jaw (ie suitable size and runs pretty true), putting a smaller 4-jaw in that won't introduce any off center load. The 4-jaw would be centered naturally.
Obviously then chucking something off-center in the 4-jaw will, but no more than it will if that 4-jaw was mounted directly to the spindle.
Unless you are referring to the off-center load in combination with the distance from the spindle. Yes - potentially slightly more "leverage" on the spindle due to the stick-out, but since we're talking small 4 jaw on a machine that can handle a large chuck anyway I don't think that would be an issue.
Also - somewhat making the assumption that OP doesn't need the capacity of his large 4-jaw, is happy with whatever 3-jaw he has, and likely mostly uses that anyway. So keep the 3-jaw on, and throw in the small 4-jaw when required.

If I have to do repetitive parts, I'd much prefer a 3 jaw to hold them and centre (or off centre) that chuck once in a 4 jaw than having to re-centre every time, which you would have to do if you had a small 4 jaw in a larger 3 jaw. The OP has a 12" 4 jaw, so that could hold a decent sized 3 jaw. I would imagine that his 3 jaw is 6 to 8", so the size of 4 jaw he could put in that would be far smaller.
I'll have to disagree with your disagreement.

Yeah 8" is the go - I have an 8" 3 jaw on a D1-6 mount.
I also have a 12" Bison 4 jaw and it's a LOT heavier than even the 10" 4 jaw chuck let alone the 3 jaw.
So depending on the size of stuff needing to be gripped, I'd go for an 8" chuck. Lots on fleabay, probably as good a source as anywhere.
I'm facing the same issues myself - getting older and not wanting to handle big/heavy chucks. I just fitted a 12" 4 jaw to my DS&G lathe because I had it there but I'm looking for smaller & lighter ones right now.
As for gripping a smaller chuck in a larger one, I don't do that. Just don't like the idea.

Well I am in the same boat age wise, so I built a swingarm above the lathe and use a $20 block and tackle to change my chucks. It's manual, but if I had the room, I would have an electric winch, cheap as at the big green shed.

4 Jaw no longer needed.
Thanks to all that replied, I no longer need this chuck, the lathe and existing chuck has been sold.
