Involute gear cutters 12dp 1" bore
Need to cut some change gears for my lathe and having trouble finding cutters with bore size to suit the 1" horizontal mill arbors I have. Specifically need the cutter for 55-135 teeth which is either #2 or #7 depending on manufacturer.

The one's readily and cheaply available on ebay all seem to have metric bores. Like you, I only have imperial spindles on my horizontal mill. I've considered making a metric spindle, but that's not a 5min job. I did find a metric sized arbor to fit my vertical mill (NT30) which has worked ok for the odd gear. I'm sure the imperial ones are around, NOS perhaps, or from the US. At a price!
Cheers, Tony

Just a thought, but depending on the physical gear size and clearance etc, you might be able to run a metric bore cutter using an R8 arbor in the bridgeport head.

Yeah I have a 1" R8 slitting saw arbor as well, hoping I might be able to pick up a cutter to suit an arbor that I already have otherwise it just compounds the job. The horizontal arbor on my mill was bent when I bought it, took ages to find one close to the right length and it wasn't cheap. Don't want to repeat the exercise just for one cutter.

We use Ashgear over in the usa for stuff like that, but their prices might be outside a hobby budget.

https://www.rdgtools.co.uk/acatalog/...R_CUTTERS.html $50 with the exchange rate plus shipping for the UK, which usually isn't too bad.

That looks like a good source, interestingly that page shows every cutter in the set except the one I need! Cutter #2 will enable me to do the 60 and 127-tooth gears that I need for metric threading on my lathe. I'll give them a call during pommy business hours and see if they have it.
There are cheaper sources online but the idea of using Chi-speed-steel cutters I would not trust to cut a 1-tooth gear in plastic.

YMMV Pete, but I’ve had no issues with the Chinese cutters I’ve used to make the mild steel change gears for the Takisawa. I only bought the 3 individual cutters I needed, but have done pretty much the full set of gears.
I just run them at proper speed with plenty of oil for lube and they’ve held up fine.

I had to google YMMV. You teenagers and your txt-speak.
TBH (see what I did there) the main barrier to the chicom cutters for me is finding something with a 1" bore so I can use my horizontal mill arbor. I was hoping someone may have a pile of cutters they don't use. Can always try

I've got the cutter you need but bitter experience has led me to not lending cutters any more. If you were closer we could work out something WRT a loan but not once it involves the postal service.
If you get really, really stuck and aren't on a tight timeline I may cut the gear(s) for you as long as you do all the work making the blanks. And, depending on the bore, the arbor if I don't have one the correct diameter. I've far too many jobs on ATM and lost 5 weeks of this year getting back from the big island thanks to covid travel restrictions.

Thanks PDW, I don't think I would be comfortable using a borrowed cutter for a job like this either, was more hoping that someone might be in a position to sell me one they don't need. There's no urgency to this job and I think the whole point of having a hobby workshop is to do this stuff yourself rather than to pile work on others- I'm sure we all have a mountain of work in our lives waiting to be done, this job is not at the top of my own urgency list so I wouldn't want to add it to someone else's.
Cheers
Pete

For some strange reason I have a duplicate no. 2 12DP, 1" bore.
PM me if you are still looking for one.
