Thread: Expression of interest - fabrication of container collection bins - Parkside SA

Hi Folks,

I am the chairperson of the Grounds and Facilities Committee at the kids local public primary school. I have been approached by the Sustainability Committee (yes we have lots of committees) as they are wanting to get some 10c recycled container bins fabricated and thought I might know somebody. Final design isn't critical, however I was provided these examples:

Whilst I spend more time in the Woodworking forums, I thought it would be worth asking for any expressions of interest in assisting with the fabrication of these bins. They would be looking at 3-4 bins and this will be a paying job.

Due to logistics this is best for somebody located in Adelaide.

Looks like a project groups of supervised senior primary kids could perhaps help assemble

Adult buys some sheets of galv mesh and cuts up and sands cut edges.
Kids assemble using galv wire grips - their nimble little fingers will be perfect for this.

I don't want to do racingtadpole put of a potential job here but another source off this type of work are men's sheds. If course they will expect to be paid appropriately.

Strangely enough Bob, not many men's sheds in Adelaide do metal. Not sure why (insurance?) but a bit disheartening.

Interesting. At last count I've visited 28 mens sheds in WA and all bar a couple do metal work of some form or another. Some sheds (especially country shed) have extensive mechanical workshops, a some even have hoists. Most would have a metal lathe and welding gear. The shed I'm currently a member of have shed that has 2 ex-welding instructors and a group than makes knives. They have two metal lathes and a mill although I don't thing anyone uses they mill that much.

A couple year back they built this 6m long Al bridge for a major medical fundraising org - attendees were invited to "pin their financial ledges to the bridge"
Scenes of major European city canals and waterways were projected on the big screen behind - this was the fund raisers idea not th mens shed.
The shed supervisor at the time was a former boilermaker and coordinated the metal working group to make it from the shirt load of free Al they were given by a local manufacturer.
It looks flimsy but 10 people can stand on it no problems.
It was designed to easily comme apart so it was easy for us old timers to move to around and put in and out of storage etc.
Apparently it has been used by the medical fund raiser two more times since.

I think the mens shed got paid $2500 for this effort.

There are actually more Men's Sheds located around Adelaide than I was expecting. When I first moved over here (over 10 years ago now) I had a look for woodworking clubs but these were thin on the ground, especially compared to Geelong where I was a member of a club. Unfortunately the meeting times of Men's Sheds doesn't really fit around regular work hours. Given the size of the project I think it would be easier to work with an individual, and I know that the members of these forums will have the knowledge, skills and integrity to do the project.

Hopefully I have responded via PM to those who have expressed interest.
