Tony...
Just in passing (and if you are still looking for heads and chasers)... just bought a bunch of chasers (to fill up some spaces in the ever increasing sets) from a guy in pommy land (he lists on the bay as well) Ben from "tools4youltd".
Was about normal price $30 odd per set (when you buy a few) but the freight was more than fair (a bloody change) @ about $12. Also pay via Paypal... so you have the advantage of back up if somthing goes amiss!
He also had die head and parts (sorting a replacement face plate for mine at the moment) and had a 1/2" head listed at a fair price (sub 100). A lot of his tooling is a bit on the high side, but NT holders and coventry stuff appears to be at good prices.
I have a 3/4 head and some chasers, which is now redundant; as I have set up for the 1/2" and 1" heads respetivly. The 1/2 on the colchester and 1" on the Big lathe. Got a bunch of 1 1/2" head chasers and a head as well... burried somewher in the w/shop.
Post.... with the grinding jig you inquired about... havent forgotten you and have the thing sitting on the bench to take some photo's of and post em for you... just have to get the young bloke to show me how to "light the piolet on my keroseen powerd camera"!
Cheers... steve

Thanks Steve. That toolz 4 you bloke has some very interesting stuff, and a good range. The poms have access to some nice gear, although I notice that the prices of their machine tools (from any supplier) are not cheap. If you want cheap and good quality, the yanks are ahead of both us and the poms, but the postage really kills it for us (plus the GST, import fees, and exchange rate). We seem to be well served here in Oz with Chinese or Taiwanese stuff - but even that has crept up in price over the last year, and quality can be a bit hit and miss.
The freight you paid seems a lot less than he has on his ebay site. Did you go direct from his web site, and he supplied an all up price for the bundle?
Since asking on this forum I have picked up two 1/2 inch heads and two 5/16 heads. The two smaller heads were a bit of a bonus in a 'lot' I purchased which included a swag of chasers (1/2 and 5/16) and an elusive genuine Herbert grinding fixture (will all the bits). Damn lucky to jump on that one! Mind you, it was not cheap, but it was just too good to pass up. You can never have too many tools.....
Thanks for offering to fire up the kerosene powered camera. Between the two of us, perhaps we can help others if they want dimensions to build their own. Given the price of the chasers, the ability to extend their life through sharpening makes a sharpening jig project worth the time and effort.
I had better get to and start cutting some threads on the old Hercus capstan, to put all this good gear back to work. The 1/2 inch head is about as big as the old girl will handle.
Cheers, Tony

Tony...
Yeh the freight on the ebay site is just the "generic" one size fits all job I think... the origional request for a bundel price was GDP 8, and with the 9 sets I just got was only GDP 12... so he certainly looks after you with freight whey you want to play! The Yanks will do the same but NOT to the same extent. Used to be a UPS 20 lb box was about $25... and you could stuff it up to the weight limit (providing it would fit in same).
Good find with the heads! Trowling about there are a lot of 5/16 chasers about. Got a new set of 5/16 head M5 's' grinds if you want to swap... come from our mate in Sydney who (as happens to often with him) sent them as "to suit 1/2" head"... just refunded the $ and never asked for them back!
Now you have your jig... $ on the side to sharpen for others. I do a few comercially (usually on the universal jig... hence me having to finde the dedicated 1/2" one) "top grind and approach grind" is usually $25 (same as ridgid pipe cutter chasers) and if am doing just 1 set add $5 to set up grinder... to just one lot. Dedicated grind shops are usuall $35 set (and half the time stuff em up). I have 3 TC grinders, 2 scmidt 400 mm cnc blade grinders (cold saw blabes) TC saw grinder, anular cutter grinder, 2 Brilie drill grinders up to 3" and all the 'associated bloody paperweights' that go with them... so have been known to make a "spark or two"! Do a lot of repairs for the fabrication guy's... so have just tooled up over the years... as the market devloped for new stuff to be repaired and sharpened... beyond welding m/c repairs (main forte).
What chasers to you need and what have you a spares... mau be able to swap? By the way I noticed today on that tools4you site he has some BSB and BSF chasers (look at pitch because not many list them as what they are... and just list what is on the chaser... ie 3/8 20, not 3/8 BSF etc... been caught a few times! )
Cheers and good to talg again...Steve

Great info Steve. I thought only us dinosaurs used die heads, and needed the chasers sharpened. I guess the CNC guys might use them too.
Re chasers, I'll check what I've got and get back to you. I do know I've got a few really odd ball ones....probably not that useful to you either.
Cheers, Tony
