Default WTB - Couple of larger taper shank drills

Looking for a couple of larger taper shank drills for the lathe - actual size isn't critical as its just for making larger initial holes prior boring.

Biggest I've got at the moment is 32mm, so looking for anything bigger than that - up to around 60mm (2 1/2")
New/blunt/damaged - whatever. Let me know if you've got anything surplus that you are interested in moving on.

If you have 32mm then I assume you have an MT3/4 adapter but over 50 will be MT5

    Thanks Bob.
Tailstock is MT3 and I don't currently have an adapter to #4 or #5 so I'll need to get one. Thought I'd hold off and see what shanks I end up with first. I'm sure if I buy one in advance I'll end up needing the other size (or a sleeve)!!

Expensive buggers those things. Ever since I got the Graziano I've been watching for MT4 drills for much the same reason as you (I already had a cheap MT3 set up to 30mm which I bought a MT4 sleeve for), but the prices on them make me cringe.

I did manage to pick up just after Christmas, 1 at 32.54mm and 1 at 37.3mm for $80 the pair (used) off eBay, which is the only reasonably priced ones I've seen.

Occasionally you'll see bulk lots at the auction that don't go too high, problem is half the time they don't specify taper, or size, you just have to guess scale... Anyway, the point is, if you end up finding a bulk lot with some duplicate or close MT4 sizes, I could be interested in buying some, so keep that in mind if there's a bulk lot that's a bit more than you want to spend.

    Hi Steve
I'll have a look to see what spares I have this evening - as it happens I picked up a 46mm in a job lot of stuff last week!
    Cheers

Not handy to location, and god knows what they'll end up, possibly a few likely prospects here in MT4 going by my vernier eye - https://www.grays.com/lot/0374-50438...-machine-drill and smaller https://www.grays.com/lot/0368-50438...machine-drills

Morse drills always seem to be sought after in big lots no matter the size I find - miss out most times bugger!

Did pick up some large 4s for a mate in lots of 6~10 drills, under 2" from memory and 5s for mine relatively cheaply....which came from a radial arm drill iirc...up to around 2 5/8".

That particular drill in multiple adaptors wouldn't inspire much confidence in the typical small tailstock, short of working cheese for the swiss. I could see lots of broken adaptors in the tray in the future - looks pretty big in the MT5 tailstock hanging out 10 or 12".

Could probably run it in one of those morse taper toolholders on the toolpost. I'm pretty sure I've got enough clearance to run an MT5 holder on the Graziano if I wanted, not so sure about OxxAndBerts Takisawa - in theory it should have enough height over the cross slide being a 14 inch swing, but depends on the toolpost he's running....

No idea how well they perform compared to running straight in the tailstock, but the Graziano came with an MT3 holder, so I guess I might as well give it a go sometime. It actually has a slot for the tang to engage into, so at least the drill won't spin in the taper like it's done a couple of times on the AL335...

Be interested to see how the toolpost mounting works, never attempted it, despite having holders.

Decided to have a squizz, that lot 368 I think did have at the very bottom a couple of MT5s, which are possibly included as they seem to have divided the cabinets into upper and lower lots, one appeared to be 2.5" although the marking was mangled, the other 2 15/16, taper and tang a bit munted instead! They and others have been "sharpened" for counterbores. There's also a big MT5 around 3.5" on the floor, which must have cost a bomb, but not in any obvious lot.

A few taper shank drills here if you want a drill to go with it.

Why? At the moment, (Yes I know it may change) you could pick up the drill bits you wanted and leave all the rest, including the drill, and still be laughing all the way to the bank. Actually I rather like the look of that old drill, it certainly has capacity for large drill bits, perhaps not too generous in terms of throat depth, but the powered downfeed would be nice for stuff like stainless steel. All I would need would be the room to house it
