WTB - UNC/UNF taps and dies
Before I start hitting ebay etc I thought I'd ask here in case anyone has surplus odds and sods or a complete set they would like to turn into dollars.
Looking for some UNC/UNF taps and dies up to about 1". At the moment all I have is a cheap set up to 1/2" so anything is useful.
I definitely need a 7/8-14 UNF tap+die at the moment for a particular job.

Steve,
I have a spare 7/8" UNF-14 HSS intermediate taper tap, unfortunately I don't have any dies this size.
Let me know if you are interested in purchasing this, I can post a photo if you like.
thanks
Paul

I have some duplicates in NF/NC and BSW/WW I’d be prepared to part with. Any particular sizes you are after, I don’t have anything past 3/4.

I've had mixed experience with second hand taps and dies. The might look OK but have great difficulty in starting to cut a thread. I've found a test for small dies is can they start a thread in something like brass. It appears that if they are blunt all they will do is chip out the metal rather than start the cut. Recently I experienced this when using a 3/16" die on some MS (a bit hard to start but otherwise OK) and then using the same die tried to start some threads in brass - no chance.

Thanks Bob - good tip.
Racingtadpole - thanks, so far I've managed to stay clear of needing BSW!
Hold off for now on digging any out as I've found a reasonably priced Teng Tools set online that covers from #4 up to 3/4".
Still $200 but has a couple of metric fine sizes that I've been meaning to buy individually anyway so might be an economic option. Its certainly not a Sutton HSS equivalent but the other Teng tools I've used in the past have been decent quality.
I'll ponder a bit more and report back

Years ago i bought a set of metric coarse gun taps and tapping drills from this bloke who also sells on eBay under the name of cncpoorboy. https://shop.gbrengineering.com/inde...unction=search I later bought a set of HSS dies to match the taps from him as well as a set of spot facing counterbore cutters. I have been very happy with all the tooling, which as far as I can tell was of Euro origin. I bought the set of counterbores going from 3mm to 12mm, (3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12MM) for less than I was quoted for one 4mm Sutton counterbore - $90, go figure, and they have been great, but come to think about it, they may be of Chinese origin, and it's too dark wet and cold to go out to check! Just looking the larger U.N.F. taps were somewhat eyewatering in price, not so bad if you only need one or two, but would be pretty speedy for a large set. If you do buy from him direct, he doesn't slug you GST, which most eBay sales is more than 10%of item cost +shipping, and I have to wonder if the money is even passed on to the ATO, after all what authority would the ATO have over an English company operating in England?
Years ago I was fortunate to get from America a set of GTD - (Greenfield Tap and Die) taps and dies, in both UNC and UNF, from 1/4 to 3/4". The dies are made so that they can be sharpened on a surface grinder when they get a bit blunt, and the stocks incorporated a guide to keep everything in line as you started to tap a thread on round bar. The whole lot came in a wooden box about 30"long by6''wide and 2''deep, and only the 5/16 tap was damaged on the end. I can't remember how much I paid for that set, but it was quite cheap compared to nearly every other equivalent set I ever saw on eBay, and the postage was very reasonable too. Quite different to American postage today. Good luck in your quest.
Rob.
