    Default Single burner stove

    Hi all,

Not afraid to say I love camping!

Recently I thought I would purchase a single burner stove with a bayonet fitting so I could attach to the camper for boiling a pot of water etc. I have the option of using the 3 burner stove in the galley or on an open fire but sometimes you want hot water for a coffee outside and sometimes you can't be bothered lighting a fire, hence the option.

Looked on Ebay and saw that there are heaps of single burner LPG stoves. Usually with a manual piezo ignition. So I looked at the pricing and bought one at the middle of the range price point.

When it arrived I couldn't have been more disappoint and the complete piece of shait!

It was massive, paper thin "stainless steel" with razor edges and it had about 4 pieces to the burner that comes off. Add to that, it's temperamental to light!

Figured I would never be happy with it so I decided to make my own. Yea, my wife was shaking her head too!

I have an old BBQ that will soon be going to scrap metal. It has a wok burner that I have never actually used so I figured it can donate the burner to my project.

The wok burner has an LPG connection that connects internally to the rest of the BBQ so it's connection was not compatible with a standard hose and bayonet fitting. I turned an adapter piece to a tight press fit out of brass and pressed it in with locktite. All good.

I just needed to make the frame. I have a bit of 1mm stainless sheet so I decided it was a worthwhile project for some of it. After some measurements, scribing and some hole drilling, everything test fitted pretty good. I added some curvy cutouts on the side to make it more athletically pleasing and four feet.

Folded it all up on the folder and it worked out better than expected. I was planning on welding and linishing the corners but I'm not sure I'll bother . It's pretty solid as is.

It's smaller, heavier, no sharp edges and it has electronic ignition so much quieter. I may add a three sided wind break that slots in but undecided.

    Cheers,

    Simon

    Nice job Simon!

When we cleaned out the MILs place after shed passed we found a Butane powered portable/camping stove in its original unopened box. By looking at the box I guessed a $50 value so advertised it at that price on Gumtree. I got no responses and thought I should at least check it worked and when I got it out I was like you surprised about the poor quality and flimsiness of the construction. The Butane bottle was a super sloppy fit so unless it was inserted "just-so" , it would not light. I then looked up the RRP and saw it was only $69!. So I advertised it again including an unopened 6pack of butane canisters for $25 and it sold to some German backpackers within the hour. They were definitely inexperienced campers and spoke very little english so I had to go through all the instructions with them mainly using head nods and hand waving. I was not really sure they understood, especially the bit about not using inside a tent. I still have the odd vision of the whole thing blowing up or gassing these guys.

    Hi Bob,

If the stove is the same kind that I'm thinking, with a lift up flap at one side with the butane canister underneath and the control knob at the front, I have a brand new one that I won't use after seeing at least three or maybe four on fire with flames coming out around the base where the gas canister is !

Non of the canisters exploded but you did hear and see the sudden burst of flame about a minute after the canister caught fire. Probably from the plastic in the valve assembly melting releasing the gas. Those thing sell for about ten pounds here and a four pack of canisters for a fiver.
    Best Regards:

That's the one. MIL bought it apparently because she had an electric stove and wanted to have something on hand if the electrical power failed.
Fortunately she never opened the box.

Yep those canister type butane stoves are really cheap. I have to confess owning one at one stage. I never had a mishap but I got rid of it because in really cold temperatures or high altitudes the butane didn't want to come out of the canister.

I wish I took more photos of the marking out of the sheet before folding. However I actually didn't expect it to work out as good as it did and it wasn't my intention to post it here. But after the results I couldn't help myself! Single burner stove
