    Default Fuel bowser

Hey guys , I'm tarting up an old Wayne 605 duel fuel bowser , it's late 1960's early 70's. It has all the internals which is why i bought it , i basically wanted a complete unit not an empty shell like most of them. It weighs approx 200kg so its a bit awkward to move. The plan is to redo the front panels to mirror the Wayne 505 and 605 petrols which have the rounded panels and hood. The reason this one has angled and sharp edges panels is the diesel pumps in the bottom have pulleys that extend out , and same with the hood , including plumping pipes at the top, so they need more room than a 505 hood.

As part of the upgrade I will need to make a new rounded hood and new stainless steel doors to suit . I found a bloke in VIC who had lower doors and good face plates so no need to make them. If anyone here knows how to make them , i'm happy to pay. PM me. Otherwise i'll have a go at making them out of 1mm sheet and see how it goes.

The finish will be done to a good standard but not a full on mint restoration i.e basic 2 pack paint , good clean , new panels , a light globe to be attached to hood , some lighting installed to light up the internal dials , new hoses , a reproduction sticker kit on it i.e golden fleece, Bp , Ampol ect. The overall budget including the pump cost is $2000. The pump should be worth $2500 when its completed.

    Hi Iron Triangle

Next time please post your thread in the appropriate Forum. I have moved for now into MetalWorking Projects as that's what you have identified it as.

To all new posters, please try and post in the suitable place as down the track someone may need to do a search.

It a long ways easier when all the threads are in the right place.

Good luck with the re build.

    Thank you

    Grahame

What seems odd is the LEADED marking. Back then petrol was either SUPER or STANDARD and it was all leaded, no need to mark a pump with a LEADED sign ! Maybe those markings are a later modification done in the 1980s or 90s ?

This pump was still in use the 1980's hence the leaded. I have another Gilbarco 1970's pump which had the 'unleaded' sign but at the time there was no unleaded until 1890's, so my guess is the manufacturers upgraded the old pumps to keep them going rather than replace it with a new one . It was probably in an old independent garage not a franchise like Caltex, Ampol ect .

Being a bit pedantic here, and I know it's a typo, but, I think that pump outdates the motor vehicle, just.

Found all the parts i need in the Northern Territory in a old workshop , its a bit of a mission to get there and too exy to post it , so i'm driving there next week to pickup. 26hrs drive each way approx. I enjoy driving long distances so not a issue. I just hope when i get there he's home, lol

Got all the parts including a hood and doors , ended up being a 48hr drive non stop drive 4200km (fuel and power nap stops only). Not doing that again, was a struggle towards the end.

I've started work on it but the cover panels are rusted to buggery underneath but on the upside it appears the original colours underneath the many layers of paint are yellow and blue, which indicate it may have been a Golden Fleece pump many moons ago , its also consistent with the hood having multiple holes to allow the ram to sit on it.

95% completed , i've ordered the decal kit and head globe (Ampol Theme) but won't get them until mid Jan. Decided to go Ampol theme at the last minute. Paint shop wanted $1800 to paint it all up , so i bought 3 litres of metal paint enamel and brushed it on , lol. If i get some spare $$$ in the future i might get them painted professionally , it looks ok up close but not 2 pak perfect but good enough to display in the shed. Just got find some hoses ,connections and fix the ID plate on and will be done. Total cost including the missing parts , the bowser itself , paint stripper , brushes , panels , paint , locks , new rubber , glass , top globe , stickers , bolts , just under 2k. I will make a custom made heavy duty dolly to roll it around soon.

Decals and hood arrived super quick ! I quickly knocked up a trolley with wheels yesterday with old stock lying around the shed, 25mm shs and 30mm solid MDF screwed to the frame , then glued on 1.6mm chequer plate over the top, it's a bit rough but does the job. I still need a hose and trim plates for the front panels but otherwise its 98% finished. Like i said earlier its no museum piece but good enough for the man cave ! Re fridge might do that on the next one , lol.
