I've only used one DSG with dual dials and it wasn't mine so small sample size but definitely heavy

In regards to a DRO - do longer lathes typically still use the normal glass scales? I'd need somewhere between 2.5m and 3m long, and I don't like my chances of getting one via Aliexpress etc still in one piece!

Your best bet for scales the long is newall. May as well light your wallet on fire though. I would only do the cross slide

Both of the big lathes at work use a magnetic tape scale, they are cheaper for longer lengths. I'm pretty sure it is less accurate than a glass scale, but i haven't noticed it, and i regularly need to get shoulders accurate to less than 0.02mm. I will find out what brand ours are.

One DRO manufacturer offering magnetic scales is Electronica (electronicaems.com) based in India.
In the US their products are marketed by Dro Pros, but you can deal with the manufacturer direct.
I have had been thinking of getting a DRO with magnetic scales because they are compact. Also not easily contaminated by dirt.

Interesting how you go with getting 3 ph connected.
At the shop outta town am facing a similar dilemma. A fair distance from nearest 3ph pole.
Supplier tells me my next toy will pull 32Amp for brief periods. Thinking generator possibly with power factor correction - not cheap, but dread to even get a quote from supply company.Frisky wife, happy life. Then I woke up. Can’t see me getting 3ph any time soon unfortunately - unless it gets extended closer to me with the development across the road.
Knowing my luck, if they do extend it then it will come from the opposite end and not past my place!
A generator is still an option, but hoping I can get it running reasonably on single phase with the VFD.
I’ve had the motor and spindle running tonight on the 11kW Ecogoo 220-380v VFD.
Set the start/stop Accel/decel periods to 6s, left the VFD set at its 11kW motor setting and did an auto tune. Seems to run nicely albeit with more inverter squeal than I’d like.

Not sure what your experience with power supply utilities is?
Now this is based on my 2 experiences dealing with "upgraded/new" installs. My latest is a 80 amp 3ph underground to replace a single ph overhead (privately owned poles) in town. Biggest I could get at this site without going the transformer route. Wasnt even going to ask what bad boy would cost.
If you havent simply resigned the idea as being a pipe dream, then this might be worth considering.
You can get them to do an offer to connect (paperwork excercise outlining details, cost etc..) and put in that a new subdivision is going up close to you.
Not sure how advanced this development is in real terms, but if the paperwork to put the juice hasnt been set in stone.....
Anyway enough of my 2 bobs. Time to sit back and watch the trials and tribulations of shoehorning your latest aquisition in.Frisky wife, happy life. Then I woke up. Adventures with a jolly green giant
Thanks Jatt - I'm hearing you. Spoke to my sparkie mate yesterday, he's dealing with them all the time so is going to put in a request for connection for 50A 3ph and see where it goes from there.
Been playing around with the 3D printer to make a prototype gear for the dials.
A couple of iterations later and this is looking pretty good with M0.86 (easy to do in software!), and 20T.

That is a pretty odd gear tooth size. you will have hand grind a tool if you want to cut one. 32DP is a common size that is close to what you have printed might be an option to try.

I agree with Ash - that is an odd one. As DSG are English and the lathe
oldrich in experience, I suspect it is more likely to be DP -30DP is M0.85 (for comparison, 32DP is M0.79).

Thanks guys. From measuring the closest I came up with was 30DP, but as a single piece gear that was too loose in the 3/4” bore.
I just tweaked it up FreeCAD until it was a nice fit in the bore.
The printed one actually works really well, but I guess isn’t likely to last - particularly out of PLA+.
Thinking about a making a metal one I’d probably make it from 3 pieces - a central shouldered shaft and a gear at each end.
They way it’s a solid bit in the bore so should wear more slowly than with the center toothed section in the bore like my printed one.
