Thanks John. Hopefully not the same issue here but good to be aware of it.

That's a very nice lathe Steve. Any idea roughly how much it would weigh?

Not exactly sure, but best I can work out it’s between 3500-4000kgs.

Got it moved to its final position

I really like the height it’s sitting at from an operators perspective. Just feels “right” - but means I need to find a way of raising it about 100mm off the concrete.

Given that I’m not planning to be turning any large out of balance items on it the best way I can think of is probably some red gum sleepers with steel bearing plates for the leveling bolts to bear on.

    Any other thoughts?

I made some pedestals out of 100 PFC. As long as it is attached to the lathe, there should not be a problem.

    Thanks Michael.
I’ve got a couple of odd bits of PFC and UB but not enough of a given size to do the whole job.

I’ve decided to go with the sleepers for now as they are easily available from the big green shed. Just need to make up some bearer plates for adjusters.

See how the sleepers go, but i think you may have trouble keeping the lathe leveled with them.

Yes, will have to see how it goes in that respect with moisture changes etc.

Hi Steve, what lengths of 100mm channel do you think you'll need? Can bring some over when I come to pick up the Lathe mill.

Thanks for the offer Kryn, but looking more closely when I put the sleepers in today the channel probably wouldn’t work for the tailstock and center supports anyway as the adjusters are only on one side of the pedestals.

The headstock has 4 adjusters so channel could work for that but TBH after spending about 3hrs today jacking/packing/screwing/swearing getting it down off the pallet jacks and blocks I’m not in a hurry to repeat the exercise anyway!
I figure if I let the timber dry out and stabilize over summer then seal it up it with something it shouldn’t move too much after that anyway.
The floor is painted so it won’t suck moisture up from the bottom through the concrete.
Will see if reality matches the theory though.

Here’s a picture of the bearing plates. I put a couple of screw holes in each one in case I need them, but I’m not expecting them to move on the timber.

The 16mm plate was some rusty scrap I had lying around. Didn’t see the point in skimming the top to make it look pretty!
The important bit was the recess for the adjuster to locate and bear in.
