AL 320 tail stock movement
I have had my AL320 for about 10 years and have managed to do some quite precise and close tolerance work on it. I am happy with the machine although I think making it with a double v bed would take it to the next level. Has any one managed to make the tail stock a tighter fit. It locks down ok but I still get some movement out of it particularly when using larger drill bits. Am I being too fussy or does anyone else have this issue

Is the plate that locks it to the bed machined on its clamping face?
Is the underside of the bed where the clamp plate would run , a machined surface?
Can you adjust the clamp so as to apply more pressure to the Tailstock lock?

Hi Guys,
I think Pipeclay hit the nail on the head ! If those surfaces are not flat and parallel to each other then you only get point contact.
Some time ago I flycut a clamp plate for a lathe tailstock, it was a bit like a banana with a hump in the middle. Whilst it helped the single bolt hole with the pressure from the clamp caused it to bow again. It was replaced with a piece of 12 mm plate skimmed flat. There was enough bolt length to replace the original plate with the 12 mm one.Best Regards:

I have time tomorrow morning I might have a closer look at the situation and investigate further... it would be so good to get it sorted
