How NOT to adapt a lathe carriage-stop
I bought a cheap stop from China:

Probably for a Sieg lathe. Was hoping it would clamp on my Hercus V, but it's too small:

So I thought I would try to mill it out. First, mount and clock: IMG_1056.jpg
Then, try to mill out the clearance slot.
Will a single clamp hold it? No, no it didn't: IMG_1057.jpg
OK. I'll try a dodgy old machine vice. I don't have any parallels, so I'l try to fudge it:

(then it got too hot, so I stopped for the day. Will continue the story on Monday)

I made a Hercus stop from a short piece of 25x25 square bar, and a M6x1 threaded rod for adjusting the stop. Didn't take long to make.
Parallels. Old bearings, and bearing rollers, and HSS make cheap parallels. They can be made too. There was an article in Model Engineering Workshop about that. I would need to search for the issue.

Milled out the slot a bit more:

Then upgraded to a borrowed, tilting, vice:

for opening up the V:

which seemed to do OK. Not a perfect surface finish, but for a blunt old 10mm cutter, good enough:

Now, onto the other block...

OK. Assemble and test:

A quick crank of the carriage showed that it didn't grip very well.
1) Tried tightening the M6 lever clamp as much as I dared. A gentle push from the saddle will feel you are at the stop, but I can't imagine when actually cutting something – pushing a cutter into hot metal – that it would restrict very much.
2) Tightened it a lot more. It almost does the job, but looking closely shows that the back of the top half is lifting away from the V.
3) Hacky solution, using what I had on hand:

Summary: A clamp designed for a 15mm? V isn't strong enough for the Hercus's 20-ish-mm wide V

There a some good examples of lathe stops made by forums members on this site including mine.

I have since slotted the stop bar and added matching pin to the body to stop the dial indicator rotating during adjustment.
