Radius Grinding
My carcass has been letting me down lately so rather than sitting in the chair watching days of our lives I have been trying to spend a couple of hrs a day in the shed doing something lightweight, this has been on the back burner for a while now so....
A big thanks again to Bollie for supplying the protractor and vernier
For part/cutter/tool alignment centering and measuring offsets I am going to try a mixture of methods.
But first I have one of these https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/iGaging-....c100010.m2109 and I am going to try to adapt the reticle's onto this wyfi magnifier thingo that should be arriving shortly https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1000X-16...72.m2749.l2649
here are some pics of where it is at....

Beautiful work Shed, and definitely a level for me to aspire to
The more I look at it the more nice design features I see too. There's been a lot of thought go into that.

Radius grinding
Hi from BC.
When Alfred lion was at AB Tools he made a Youtube clip of a shop made radius grinder they have. Very smart design including stops to get the tanjant right. He also did a full shop tour lasting over an hour.

Thank you BC, I am going to fit 2 adjustable stops that will rotate for angle positioning on the cylinder between the cover and the mounting flange at the top, i think i have about 18mm there to play with after the felt seal is sitting on the cover.
I am undecided whether to make them clamp similar to the lock ring, or to press a bronze bush with a bolt against the cylinder, I think the later method will not be good enough as the diameter of the bush will be too small and the hole will weaken the ring.
The stop will be screwed into the mounting plate beside the cover.
I found those two vids you mentioned, will have proper look later but i just skimmed this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93KnDc8KNM0 I like the low profile and considered this but felt that the wheel diameter might interfere in some grinding applications, depending on what mounting plate and job is bolted to the flange, if I get chatter because of the height on mine then I might have to look at making a lower profile mount, I have my fingers crossed that the style of lock that I am using will enhance rigidity when locked as grinding forces will mostly be transferred there, if grinding a radius and needed then maybe partially locked will do the job. All hypothetical tho at the mo.
I appreciate your input BC, feel free to prod me in the right direction m8

Radius grinder
Hello again. There are a few used radius grinding attachments for sale in USA, I think STM surplus. Also on the Vintage machinery site they have manuals for a few old T & C grinders. One is the B & S model 13? You can view it online and it has parts breakdown as well as the ops manual.
The bedroom workshop has lots of Clarkson pics.

G/day Chris, the aim is to be able to bolt suitable fixtures or jigs to the flange to hold and then position cutting tools to either form or to resharpen them. eg resharpening end mills that could also be provided with a radiused corner, or set the angles and grind a acme thread cutting tool with the correct angles and corner radius's, I might have a crack at resharpening some carbide inserts also.
So in a nutshell if something can be held and positioned correctly then quite accurate angles and radius's should be able to be ground, or maybe also lightly milled.....

His Shed, I'm not sure that you understood what I was trying to say regarding Helical Flutes, the point that I was trying to make is that grinding a radius on the corners or end of a helically fluted cutter is not just a matter of swinging a radius, could you explain how you intend to do it?

Techo I think that there will be a few things that are going to be a bit of a problem to set up to grind.
Most of my tool grinding has been done by hand with the bench grinder, more recently i have
sometimes put the top slide from the hercus on the t&cg so this will be a next level for me i suppose i could say.
I just had a look at this 25mm end mill that needs a touch up, at the mo i dont know.
I dont have an air spindle or even bushed spindle to hold lt, maybe those things will come later.
I know you have an air spindle and experience with this so any ideas or guidence you could provide
would be appreciated.

I can't offer much advice Shed, all I can say is that grinding a radius on an end mill or slot drill that will produce a "true radius" when cutting metal, is not a simple task even with something like a Clarkson Fixture. I have used a Clarkson MK1 Radius Fixture (only suitable for straight flute cutters)
and also the MK2 fixture which is designed for Helical Flute radius grinding but the results were not 100%. I also have the first version of the Darex radius grinding fixture which was completely useless and was replaced free of charge with their new improved version that was only slightly better but still not up to the task. I spoke to one of the owners of Darex at the Machine Tool Expo in Melbourne a few years ago and he confirmed that the
radius grinding fixture for the E90 was a failure and was no longer being manufactured.

No worries Techo, I will keep doing what I am doing and worry about the end mill radius later on at some stage.

Mounting base
Here are some pics of the mounting base, it was cut from a 32mm thick disc that had been flame cut and it was a bit wonky.
I milled the sides parallel and linished the corners then I spun it up in the lathe, i faced one side then used a bore gauge to
true the faced surface to the chuck. I have yet to drill and tap the holes for cover and the stop peg.
The mounting holes will allow this to be held on the tool and cutter grinder either in line with the table or 90 deg to it or at a 45, it can hang out the back of the table for use with smaller wheels if need be, the smaller hole distances are to fit the t slots on the little centec mill and the larger two holes suit the t slots on the anayak mill, up the other end i left a corner on there for a hold down clamp if needed.
