Kira Drill Press
Found a old drill press a few years ago so thought Id start to bring it back to life. Its a KIRA NSD-340 made in Japan around mid 1970's.
The original 3 phase motor besides looking a bit tired was hard wired 3 phase star so as no 3 phase in shed fitted a new 3 phase motor and a single phase to 3 phase VSD.
Ran it up to speed and noticed wobble in the chuck area. Found a old manual on google and after dismantling found it was missing the lower bearing. best part 6202 and 6203 bearings so after searching in shed found some and put it all back together. Manual is here if anyone might need it. https://catalog.zenkiren.net/catalog_pdf.php?id=7108
Made up a stand and mounted it up. Its a 3/4 size column so needed to lift it up a bit 600mm. then start to remove the surface rust.

Next project might be the Tough bench drill similar to the Kira, again found on verge pickup.

Just replaced the 3 phase motor with a single phase motor. Found with the VSD it didnt have enough torque.
Works well now. Also replaced the keyed chuck with a keyless one that was on the Tough drill I recently found.
Its a well made drill, what you would expect being japanese made, and now with new bearings its less than a couple of thou runout.
Just need to source a new belt as reused the original drive pulley and the belt from 3 phase motor pulley was too short.

Hi,
Great job!
Well worth the effort you put into it and something that shall be accurate and reliable for a very long time.

G/day sparksy, a big improvement would be if you can fit an intermediate pulley.
A few mths back i fitted a 1 hp 3ph motor and vfd to my little drill press.
I drilled a 25mm hole with it not long ago with smoke pouring off the oil....love it, I never have to change the
belt speeds now.
cheers,
